Bonez, hey m8, I too let my facial hair grow after I got out of the mob, I got called 'Borneo Wild Man' by a few mates for a while there. These days though I now sport a neatly trimmed goatee [well...some of the time, esp when Im @ births weddings, stonings & hangings] After I left the Air Farce I had a bike shop in CHCH for a while but after my boy died of cancer I packed that in,built another garage & now play @ home

It does in my books. Always a pleasure picking on a rookie that knew what they were doing.

Cool thread; nothing "Major" here, but enjoyed 5 years as TF Grunt Driver, 6th Hauraki then Trentham, started on the good old RL's - did the 1st Unimog training course run - Driver training was definitely a good choice - fond memories of Annual Camp at Six Cross (Original Cold Kiwi site) where fellow Grunts were running everywhere in the sun all kitted up, while I grabbed some shade under the truck sipping a sly beer......ah, the perks! Passed POSB and was offered RF intake and posting to Singapore, but a lovely Girl at the time stopped me from committing. Hmmmm. Sometimes wonder where I would've ended up.

Great to read of others exploits, much respect and great memories...

Mate don't forget to pass those by one of the War Museum Curators will you. As Cola said, they're exceptional quality and they may fill in a piece of history. The important stuff is often the details in the background. That crash may be the only pic of it, the aircraft registrations and the locations. They could be the only photos of those things or people in the living history.

Did just over 7 years in the NZ Army. The first 18months partying up in Trentham at CIT and then shafted to Waiberia for the last 5 and a half years.
The last couple of years was at QAMR and got a trip to East Timor from October 99 thru to about June 2000.
When I started it was all good, heavy drinking, lots of getting f$%ked around for the sake of getting f%$ked around, but by the end things were getting pretty soft.
The whole show got softened up, physically and emotionally so that they could allow all the sick, lame and lazies (and women/girls) to pass without making them cry too much, or being accused of discrimination.
The best thing I learned was how to 'not get caught' doing anything.
It was a good experience while it lasted and I had plenty of good mates, but by the time I left I was pretty anti-army and anti-government.
Good character building stuff. I just concerned about what sort of character it built. I'm still willing to call a spade a spade and not give a f%$k about what people think.

RNZEME 1979-1981 based Papakura. Finished my apprenticeship with the Army. A good time for a young lad.

I'm a correspondent for the Army News - got a badge with my name on it but a contractor rather than an employee!
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!
