    Whatever you do DON'T SMILE!

A member of a Maori welcome party has appeared in court after head-butting a tourist at a Tamaki tours function in Rotorua.
The Dutch tourist was selected to answer the challenge. He was told not to laugh while doing so, but being a tad nervous he grinned while doing so. As people do.
Bad mistake, in doing so he seriously insulted this particular welcoming person and paid the price with a broken nose.
    Speed doesn't kill people.
    Stupidity kills people.

Be interesting to see the outcome.... I wouldn't be surprised if the accused was given a "lightish" punishment.

To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if he was given a warning but remain employed by the board. Its a cultural thing, and they may justify it by saying it was offensive to their culture.
I am in no way condoning whats happened though.

Im meaning the fact that the guy was told not to smile and did so, im thinking that their argument may be that the tourist was being offensive to the accused.... the laws an ass remember!

Even if he smiled, be lenient as he was a tourist. I don't think we need to assault our tourists, especially when they don't understand some of our kiwi ways.

He's probably a relative of the stupid bitch on a train from Featherston to Wellington who muttered "we speak English here" to two Chinese women speaking their own language. Despite the fact they then started speaking softly, she threw a bottle of water all over them and then punched one. I have no idea if the two were tourists or not, but it doesn't give a very good impression of how friendly NZers are. It's not bad enough that we rob, rape and murder many of them, now we have to break their noses and punch them!

Can you imagine if the French got upset with all the poms not speaking da lingo when they go there? They'd all be nursing sore knuckles!
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!

Actually the French are pretty much like that. Try speaking to a French person in France in English and see how you get on (it's not pretty). Different in good hotels etc but the French person on the street doesn't want to speak in the language of les rosbifs. Big generalisation, it goes without saying

As I understand it the traditional etiquette for the challenger in that situation is to cleave the visitor's head in two with the taiaha.
I think the tourist got off light.
