You shouldnt worry because there are frequent quakes.
When you live on a faultline you worry when there havnt been quakes for a long time.
Much better to have a gradual release than store up all that energy

Living in the shaky Isles, we do have some rock and rollers, The last biggie last year left 1/2 a city homeless.
So its not uncommon to be woken in the nite . The method which I have found most effective is to listen to the china in the cupboard, rattling is about 4 to 4.5 ( using the japanese scale ) when the plates start to fall out of the cupboard , seek shelter ... there will be some damage to the building.

When the cupboard falls over ... Make sure your near the toilet as theres drinking water there and they may not find you for a few days

Funnilly enough its proven reliable, though I dont want to see the cupboard fall over ...the Niigata one scared the willies out of me !!!

Felt it at our place alright.
According to GeoNet it was just about right under us, which would probably explain why it took us 45 mins to clean up the glass of red that it tipped all over our cream carpet!!

Felt it up in Karori - didn't bother to get up and it didn't shut my wife up she was ranting right through it!
When my daughter was young, about 3 I think, she was in bed when we had one and she got up to ask if she could go see it.
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them
