Crime statistics to be released next week will show car burglary is out of control in some parts of the country, National's law and order spokesman Tony Ryall said today.




"In many parts of the country, police are giving up responding to burglaries from cars," he said.

"Over the past four years these offences have gone up at least 13 per cent and in greater Auckland by 19 per cent."

Mr Ryall said car burglars were often the same people who engaged in similar crimes like burgling houses.

"Catch them breaking into cars, and it will stop them robbing your home," Mr Ryall said.

He blamed government policy for the situation, saying it was neglecting theft.

"Instead of making police spend hours hiding in bushes ticketing people driving marginally over the limit, they should be stopping criminals ransacking cars down the road."

Most theft from cars is commited by Juvenile offenders. They get caught but the Youth Justice system is a crock so they get let out and can carrying on offending.

Theft from cars occurs on three basic levels.

The majority of theft ex car is kids looking for money or small items of value.

Then there are offenders who steal lager items of value such as stereo systems and laptops, cameras etc left in the car. Their intention is sell the items.

Lastly there are organised theft rings that will pinch a whole exhaust system off an Evo, or expensive race seats etc because they have a buyer for it. These wankers often target car yards whereas the previous types off offenders target unattended vehicles.

The offenders for the first two categories are usually youths and make up the majority of offenders. The bigger picture is that the Youth Justice system is failing but lets just blame the police as usual, Lou.

Lou, pollies will always run with whatever they can get headlines with. Next week it will be something else. They only do it to score points against the Govt. If this goes anywhere it will be the Nats baying for Hawkins to resign, they wont do a thing about improving the situation regarding theft from cars because thats not what motivates them.

i agree with your last point there spud. if National (or any party/politician) got wind of a few people in this country starting any new fad that they thought there might be votes in you can guarantee they'll try championing it for at least a week. maybe i'm getting cynical in my young age but its getting harder to genuinely beleive that the politicians are there to genuinely serve our countries best needs but are simply desperate to 'be the government'... at which point they can figure out how to cling on to their position past the next election.

To be fair to Tony Ryall, he has been singing from the same hymn book for quite some time. But, I don't believe that the Nats in general would be any different. I guess it's up to the people to keep the pressure on.

You are right Lou but when the economy is down it takes more effort in managing fiscal policy not always to everyones liking, even mine. But now we are in good times, even a mediocre government can make themselves look good, how would they do if times got bad again? BTW I don't vote for the nats.

IF, on the other hand, police spent more time on the beat and working with the community, instead of hiding in said bushes, we would have a higher level of prevention. Blaming the justice system for youth crime is like blaming a band aid for not healing a broken arm.

This goes back to our general fall in respect for police. Another poster questioned our attitude towards our police. I think we're getting a raw deal and the cops deserve all the sh*t we can throw at them. There are fewer and fewer good coppers out there. My old man was a plod in the late seventies and thought it was going down hill back then...our police force is a complete f'n shambles now compared to those days - they've completely lost the respect of the people they are entrusted to serve.

The only reason they still get away with being so bloody useless is us Kiwi's are generally so used to just rolling over and taking it up the arse. Mass civil disobedience is our only option! F**k da police, yeah, yeah, f**k da police...
