Dont Buy any thing made by a consumer electronics company eg sony , samsung, Panasonic. stick to companys that built there reputation on camera manufacture like Canon, Nikon, minolta, olympus, Pentax.

4 Megapixel is the lowest resulution that you should consider. In my opinion and this is only my opinion the Canon A520 is probably the best buy at the mo $299 in the parallel import shops, $499 in Harvey Norman or the camera Warehouse so it does pay to shop around. 512meg is a good sized memory card normaly at around $130

Why do you think SONY - with Carl Zeiss lenses & Sony imaging technology should be kept away from? Would you not buy a Sony handicam either (they use a lense too)?

I have a few Camera's, spent years carrying my fathers lenses bags / inter-changeable backs around , kind of took the enjoyment out of photography to a certain point. Got into the SLR thing myself for a while but the one I end up using the most is the most portable one, not the one that takes the best pictures. (1750 pictures taken in 15 months)

I'm using a Sony T1 camera as it's small enough to fit inside a jacket pocket , I have it set to auto most of the time which ends up taking a reasonable picture despite it's small lenses size. 5mp gives good 6X4's and ok A4's.
The Camera will also take VGA movies at 30 fps which is handy (no zoom during movie mode though).

Have started getting into the multimedia side a lot more since going digital , Tend to produce movies out of the still's / Videos onto laptop and burn to DVD.

The T9 is the latest version and comes in at your price range.

Sony gear is fine, people often forget how much gear they have for high end movie production, TV studio equipment, Movie Theatre equipment, broadcasting equipment.

    ended up getting a fuji S5600 .
no one in town here had the sony nadrol was talking about and i needed to get it before xmas.
the camera takes good pics has 10X zoom and 5.7 digital.
ive only used auto mode so far as i know jack about cameras.
it does a fair bit but im not sure if i'll use functions much.
will like to try them all though.
do the photo software packages you can use do much differently than the software that came with the fuji?
it is finepix viewer and image mixer for finepix.
havn't tried it much yet but it seems to do most things i need. ( i think anyway)
so cheers for all the help as it was much appreciated from this camera newbie.

it is amazing how often i use it even though it was a present for trace, she hasn't been able to get near it yet as it's always in my mitts.
