    Not another Brit

    Hi guys and gals.

My names Mike and at the moment I'm still in the uk, but me and the girlfriend are moving out to Nz next september (somewhere around Auckland)....so I thought I'd better find out about biking there.

I ride a suzuki GSXR600 at the moment, and will probably bring it with me (company paying relocation!).

Anyone know about importing bikes into Nz, I can't be the first? And for those few who have made the move, whats the craic regarding the police (everywhere, or few and far between), speeding tickets? I'm fed up with getting points over here.

Hope your all having a nice nights sleep.

    Mike

    Hi Mike

    Firstly welcome to the forum.

I am a bit further ahead than you in the same process. I expect to be arriving in NZ on 1 March and am currently looking into shipping my bike. From what I understand... now are you sitting comfortably ?... if you have owned the bike for 12 months or more before you or it leave the UK and if you guarantee not to sell it for at least 2 years after arriving in NZ there will be no GST to pay. If you have owned the bike for less than 12 months, the cost price (or if unrealistically low, the NZ authorities estimate of true value) can be depreciated depending on how many days you have owned the bike (eg. 0 - 90 days = 0% dpn, 90-120 days = 13% dpn etc.). You then add on the cost of shipping and insurance and then work out the GST @ 12.5%.
The bike will be unloaded at the docks and inspected. It should have a certificate of steam cleaning, but from what I understand they are normally steam cleaned on arrival anyway. The bike will then have to be certified, registered and WOF'd etc. I have seen figures of $800 - $1000 for this for a car but not seen any figures for bikes. I suspect it is probably the same.

The bike will be separated from your household goods at the docks and need to be collected separately.

If the bike was manufactured after 01/10/2002 it has to meet certain braking regulations, but I believe compliance with this will be indicated on the EU Vin plate on your frame. If you have aftermarket brake pipes (eg. Goodrich braided hoses) they will not meet NZ safety standards and have to be replaced before the bike will be allowed on the road.

You will also need to provide proof of ownership, ie. UK V5 and purchase invoice.

You may find info here useful:
    www.ltsa.govt.nz/factsheets/44.html
    http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/publications...urope.html#lcb

I have to say that I am not yet convinced that it is worth shipping. It will probably work out cheaper to sell in the UK and buy again in NZ.

If I can be of any further help....

NZ has to be about the best country in the world for biking! Not that I'm biased or anything...! Had lots of tales from immigrants re: hassles with Immigration, but patience and persisitence pay off. Not sure about importing, though others who have replied seem to know the ropes quite well. The 600 is an ideal size for this country but it's true, bikes are relatively cheap here by comparison. It's a different world down here, don't judge the country just by Auckland though, you gotta get out and about to really appreciate wot we got here!

Oh,:slap: PS. Heavily Policed in the Auckland area, lotsa speed cameras and you have to be careful, but out in the rural areas, esp. South Is. much freer. Went on a ride up North, saw 1 Cop car all weekend! The Police know all the good biking roads around here, and how to hide camera vans around bends and behind bushes. Politeness and innocence still can work if pulled over, though. Got let off for overdue Road Tax in my truck - coulda been expensive!

I understand it helps if you make sure it's spotless.

If you don't have to live in Auckland, don't. It's poos compared to the rest of NZ. (Waits for the regional bunfight to insue)

    welcome to the zoo, enjoy!

Lord Alster would be the Kber to talk to as he's just brought in a bike from off shore, so would be able to give you the exact low-down on the routine.

P.S the southern end is the bikers paradise

Welcome to K.B Mike You will love the N.Z roads. I have just been over there for a holiday and reckon the roads are fantastic. Great scenery to boot. I would second limbimtimwim's comment about Auck. Far too big and busy for my liking.

Mate , you will love the biking here, as far as the police go as you have probably been told around auckland they are everywhere, but get out of the city and you do'nt see many and the roads are awesome, whether you want fast straight , twisty bits , mountain runs, they are all within 2 hours ride from auckland. We've been here for 2 years and have never looked back.
And the people here are a lot more friendly and open minded!
You will only need to sit a theory test for your bike and / or car license if you have a full UK license.
    Good luck with the move!

Welcome mate. PM Fordy, he will send you step by step instructions on how the importing works.

Hey Mike welcolme my friend,my advice to you is unless you are very attached to your machine leave it at home and buy one when you get here !
my expeirience with importing was not good.
There are plenty of good quality second hand machines here and the Bikey's here seem to be able to keep em better than we can back in YUK...
We don't get any salt on the roads in Northland and the low volume of traffic in Auckland(I just heard loads of southerners fall on their backs laffin)compared with where we come from means that there isn't as much road grime.
So sell it buddy and treat yourself when you get here..
The only real problem I suffer with here is getting too hot (never had that problem back home) but here in full leathers on a summers day if I stop to get gas or burgerfuel I reckon I lose as many calories as I take in !!! Ha Ha small price to pay though for paradice...
My carbon footprint stretches to the horizon....but I'm not a bad person....
