Touring Taranaki Jan 3-6

Righto, I'm going to be heading down to Tongaporutu on the 3rd of Jan 2006 where I'll be camping with some friends for a few days. Gonna be taking SH1 to Ngaruawahia, then SH39 to Otorohanga an SH3 on down to Tongaporutu.

Once there I'm basically planning on doing day rides around the 'Naki to see the countryside and ride some tasty roads.

Looking at a map of the Nth Is I'd like to head down to New Plymouth then ride around the mount to Hawera, follow SH3 to Stratford, then SH43 and 4 to Arapae and back to Tongaporutu. That should make for a good day's ride.

Another one could be to cut straight across inland from Ahititi to Taumarunui, ride around National Park or possibly head up SH32 and 30 to Te Kuiti and back to the coast.

Aaaanyway...if anyone would like to meet up for some rides post a reply and we can sort out contact details.

Alternatively if any of the Taranaki Hardcore can suggest some good routes I'm all ears....

Some great roads and country down there,but most of where you will be is gravel,should be ok on a cruiser.SH43 is sealed to Tangarakau Gorge,Ohura to Taumranui is sealed,but Ahititi to Ohura is a fantastic gravel road.Go around the mountain higher than SH45,cut through the ranges at Pukeiti and get on Wiremu rd,all sealed and right up in there with the mountain.Have a good cruise you lucky bugger...
