I know some guys in the states who are into Guns ,I was sent this...may be of intrest to some here.




The gun in the video is basically a "show! and tell" custom built on a
Thompson Encore (fancy version of the Thompson Contender).

The Caliber... 600 Nitro Express. That's right...an elephant gun round
in a handgun.

The story goes that the guy that built it is some kind of custom gun
maker, and built this as an exhibition piece. He takes it to the range
with him just to show it off, and the big guy that shot it (in the
video) had been bugging the builder to let him shoot it. Now think about
this...only until fairly recently (early-mid '80's IIRC) the 600 Nitro
Express was hands down the biggest, nastiest, hardest hitting, and
heaviest recoiling weapon you could buy. It was designed for one simple
purpose...to knock an elephant flat on his ass. IMO, it was really built
as an exhibition piece for guys "compensating"...this cartridge is known
for breaking collarbones, arms, shoulders...of the shooter! Think about
this...in the gun world they use what is termed as a "recoil index" to
kind of give prospective buyers an idea of what a gun kicks like. A
.30-06 gets a rating of a 1.0, which for many people is about the limit
of what they can shoot multiple rounds thru comfortably. A .243 is rated
at like a .4, a .270 was like a .8, etc.

The .600 Nitro Express is rated at a 9.4...9.4 times more punishing than
a 30-06.

Where do you reckon the projectile went? He's lucky not to be injured by that thing. Bit thick for a shooter aye. John.

(I wonder if they added a lanyard after this incident so the gun wouldn't land on the deck?)

Have seen "howdah pistols" used for fending off angry tigers that were trying to climb onto the elephant you were riding on when you wounded said tiger.

They were two and four barrels in 12 guage and 577 (Snyder) calibre and I imagined they kicked a bit too - but I guess the option of a few hundred pounds of angry tiger trying to get you would make you forget about recoil.

Chinese mate of mine, Kenneth, is obsessed with firearms and once had a collection of SMLEs - Short Mgazine Lee Enfield rfles, bolt action .303 for the uninitiated. One was "sporterised" - most the wood removed to make a hunting rifle instead of a heavy military rifle. Of course, removing a lot of the rifle's mass increases perceived recoil.

There was another Chinese bloke, Andrew, I knew and the Kenneth didn't like him very much so, when Andrew turned up where we were loosing off a few rounds at various makeshift targets and doing important ballistic experiments (to whit: "how big is the geyser when shooting cans full of water with various calibres?") and asked if he could have a go, Kenneth gleefully handed him the lightened SMLE and said "Go for it."

Andrew had never fired a firearm in his life and whe showed him how to aim and let him have a go. He pulled the trigger and the firearm discharged with a throaty roar that caused him to jump in fright - whereupon the recoil drove him backwards 2 or 3 feet before he landed. When he landed he was further back than when he started but the relative postions of his feet had not changed!

Funnily enough he had no desire for a second shot.

Later he had a go on a .22 (my old Anschutz semi auto, I recall) and found that more to his liking.

One time Kenneth and I were test firing his 7.62mm NATO L1A1 out in a quiet tract of bush that suddenly ceased to be quiet once we got started - I'm surprised OSH lets the Army fire the FAL on full auto without first encasing their heads in concrete lest the noise deafen them!

We experimented a bit to get the gas regulator adjusted - put on the midway point, fired, clicked it one way, fired again, rubbed shoulder, clicked it a couple of notches in the other, "softer recoil", direction until it had a soft recoil but still cycled the action.

We always wanted to take another mate out shooting, have a few shots on the gentle setting so he could see it was a piece of cake and then, when handing it over for him to have a go, surrepticiously dial the gas adjuster around to maximum recoil...

One day, maybe...
