Bike Repair List

Ok....

Just rang the insurance company... apparently I've got excess of 25% of the bike value = $1750, and also $500 because I'm on a non-nz license (don't get me started on this bit... they charged me the same as nz-license holders!!)

Making my total excess for a claim $2250... ouch

Well I can't afford that in a month of Sundays so I'm going to have to do the basics to get it back on the road;

- Re-attach right side peg and rear brake lever
- Re-attach and connect right side front indicator

Anyone know rough costs on the above so that I can get it road-worthy again?

Fucken insurance companies are a piss take... any suggestions for any better insurance companies? ie lower excess / non-discriminatory against poms!

Do you have the parts you've mentioned, in good usable condition? Is there damage to the bike where they need to be mounted?

I have part of the indicator, the right peg is there, but hanging off... the bit where it joins the bike is sheared off. Will try to get some pictures.

Ok here are some pictures... not too pleased with the fairing damage, but can't afford to fix it at the moment so will have to wait until after christmas sometime.

Things that really need doing are the front right indicator and the pegs. Anyone knows how to do these / where I can get them done cheap, would be great help.

Depending on the condition of your pegs you can take the bits to any engineering shop and get it welded then buy the bolts you need - should be under $50 - maybe around $35.

Your bike looks familiar. - Is it from Red Baron??

Is so go upstairs and talk to Tony or Yugi, they have a bag full of old (but working) indicators - see if one fits - should be about $10-$15......

So if all goes well you can have your bike on the road for about $50

Otherwise ring Richard at Corsa motorcycle wreckers 570 2982, or Mike on 570 6685 at Davey Motorcycle Wreckers and see if they have something or the other wreckers in the yellow pages.

You can get the fairings done by the "Grill and Bumper exchange" in Northshore. They are cheap and do a great job.
From what you say - it's looks like minimal damage - don't claim insurance back on it.

Any alloy welder (such as a boatbuilder) can fix that peg. Be aware that the alloy in peg sets is cast and won't necessarily weld neatly, but so what - can't really see it eh?

welding the footpeg plate is really only a temporary fix & has to be done properly ( has a high magnesium content).
should be something available through the wreckers:

list price for a 750 footpeg plate is $195.85 so a new one would be in the that ballpark area.
complete new indicator assembly is roughly $70 or just a lense at $18.10

Wot he said plus I can highly recommend Taylor Engineering in Newton for alloy welding. Grille + Bumper Exchange is now called The Plastic Repair Company . Talk to Paul. They are excellent, quick and reasonable. Atomic Bike Wreckers on Barry Point Rd are a good source for a lot of stuff (talk to Spencer). A possibility re indicators is to switch to aftermarket ones if all else fails , plus they can look kinda cool.

Judging from your pics the bike's a simple fix. Forget about claiming on insurance.

Change your insurance to 3rd party and put the money you save into an account for bike repairs or towards purchasing your next bike.

Would do for the insurance, but because it's on Hire Purchase they won't let me... needs to be insured incase I total it apparently.

Thanks for all suggestions... will need to have a ring around some places... can't afford to spend much at all, just really a basic cheap fix for the headlight and peg.

Edit - Tried calling around several places... no joy... apparently the ZX4Rs are used for racing a lot or something?? so that means parts are hard to get hold of.

So if anyone here knows where I can get hold of a mounting bracket for the right footpeg on a ZX4R '94 then please drop me a PM so I can get the bike back on the road. Cheers.

Ok... had a ring around.

Might be on in Atomic Wreckers but he's not sure... will find out tomorrow.

Mt. Eden want $160 for a new one as it has to come in from Japan

So I've been hunting around and found this on eBay UK. Now it's for a ZXR400 H but mine is a ZXR400 L, question is they don't look too different, do you think it'll fit? Would save me a shedload of dosh in the process.

Any help would be most welcome. Thanks.

First off I would try to get it welded. Just pull it off, take it in to an engineering shop and ask them if they can weld it. If its the same material as the engine mounts then you'll be sweet (just got mine welded) and will only cost approx $40.

To fix the fairings will be expensive and not really worth it - just leave it how it is.

However if you do decide to replace the top fairing I'll give you $100 for your old one as its still 10 times better than mine!
