I always thought of myself as a POM until several people have said exactly this to me Lou. I'm Welsh - so apparently I'm not a POM? Makes no difference to me. But if POM is an abbreviation of Prisoner Of her Majesty (or similar), then plenty of Celts ended up being shipped off to Oz. The English were particularly ruthless to the Welsh in particular if they heard a Welsh person talking in their native tongue.

I was once introduced to a Kiwi guy who asked me if I was a POM, I said, "yeah, I guess so - but I'm Welsh"
    "Same thing", the guy replied.
"No it's not", said a friend, "they're different countries."
"No they're not - they're all bloody English really", said this guy
"Why is it that all Ozzies think this way?", I asked the guy
"Fuck off, I'm a Kiwi", said this guy
    "Same thing", I said

He wasn't amused. It took one of my best ninja stares to convince him not to hit me.

Disclaimer: If you hadn't guessed already, I was obviously fucking with this guy.

Born in York, Yorkshire. Moved to N.Z when I was 8. Obviously I didn't have any choice, but I'm not complaining.

Born London or thereabouts [where my mother happened to be at the time and it seemed a convenient place to meet up] .......

brought up in a small village on salisbury plain [in the wild south] for no other reason than the rest of the family had been there a longish time .....

got a NZ job offer whilst living in south africa; took it because NZ seemed to have insufficient mineral wealth for foreign pollies to ferment local squabbles over and the media said it had minimal racial problems

there's more - its all boring..... to answer the spirit of this thread, life in the antipodies is attractive to those living threatened, constricted, expensive lives elsewhere - of COURSE we arrive in droves

.... and then we tend to hang about just to see what the rest of you lot get up to next ....
    ... ...

None of you POMs or people of the British Isles would have any breeding worth a damn if it weren't for my illustrious ancestors!
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

Pom may have had a meaning once, other that being dried potato product, but in the kiwi form of colloquial english it means someone from england. However, since many kiwis dont actually know where england is (a land mass overseas - some have been known to think that london and england are the same place), it is often used here to mean anyone from GB who doesnt have a strong irish accent. When a non-english accent is detected you will often hear the kiwi phrase "where are you from then", then their eyes will glaze over and they will nod their heads like they really do know where you are from - in reallity, they are working out if its close to london.

Some kiwi rugby supporters have seemed to pick up on the fact that wales and scotland are different places because some kiwi rugby players have gone there, although they often struggle to deal with the extra cognition required and carry on referring to everyone as a pom; this is the same as us english people calling everyone a kiwi even tho they may be from some other place such as germany of fiji or south africa and australia.
