The Cheese Cutters are doing their job.

Doing SH1 every day I've seen a big increase in the cheese cutters getting damaged.This morning I see a car parked on the median just north of Dury,a couple of cop cars in attendance,3 car lengths of posts out.Just north of Te Kauwhata I see tyre marks spear off at 45 deg and smashed posts,2 or 3 other places with posts out - this is a big increase to happen over just a few days.

Without the cheese cutters these would be head ons,with the amount of traffic on the roads they'd be lucky not to take another vehicle out....and the people inside.I got a different view of them now - it could of been me on the other side of the road.

I would still prefer them covered like they do (apparently) in Sweden, or somewhere near there... or something. Whatsit.

They sure are. Good for keeping vehicles on their side of the road. But NOT good for motorcyclists' bodies.

So does anyone actually know a motorcyclist that has crashed into these things? Not the "my mates sisters dogs cat told my girlfreinds fathers uncle john that once...." Actual first hand knowledge of a friend or aquaintance?

I haven't heard of anyone yet, but then a lot of accidents don't get reported.
If there hasn't been anyone into them, it'll be a tribute to most bikers ability rather than anything Transhit has done.

Yep. Saw someone bin it right in front of me. But he only kinda brushed the cheese cutters a couple of times, rather than a full on hit into them. The cheese cutters didn't do any damage to him on that occasion. Might not have been so pretty if he'd taken it at a more acute angle.

I agree, those wire barriers are working really well. I saw a video, possibly on the news or Sky of crash test vehicles hitting it, and they function as intended - stopping the vehicle crossing the centre line. And again, for cars, they look like a "softer" option to concrete barriers.

I also seem to recall seeing a piece of it somewhere in Welly area that was hit, and they seem to hold their shape even after impact. The car takes out a few of the upright pegs and the ones left standing on either side hold the general shape of the now unsupported wire in the middle.

Motorbikes are another story though! Can you imagine what would happen if you crashed into one, got your leg caught at the point of impact, and the rest of you kept going?:spudgrr: I'm with skunk (I THINK it was), put a cover over the chicken wire. They will save money in the long run, as ACC have to pay more for missing limbs!

so ride properly around them , they do work and id rather slow down around them if need be they do a good job and if ltsa did nothing to these dangerous stretches of road we would complain about that too

was worried as i headed down to hamilton the other day and saw a section damaged with tyre marks leading up to the cutter and looked to be over the other side. or there were skid marks inline with the opossing.
but they do worry me and they do make me slow down, so i suppose it's not a bad thing.
