Speights Gold Medal is the bog standard beer.
They drink it in Auckland with a little umbrella and a plastic animal on the rim.

Quote from my good friend The Sodfather... "There I was...Speights in one hand, trousers round my ankles, cock in her mouth, balls slappin her chin and I thought to myself.....'What a GREAT Beer!'"
What is this Speight's 'GOLD' abomination. Which northern marketing monkey thought that one up? For some reason this enrages me - every time I see an ad or price label with that on it I want to scream 'It's called 'Speights' FFS!' (Worse still if you ask for a Speight's in a bar and are asked what typeOriginally Posted by XxKiTtiExX

/rant over/
Sorry Kittie, not your fault - just needed to get that rant off my chest. Old Dark is a nice drop - but if you want a real Dunedin beer try the Emerson's range - my fave is their organic pilsener. Hard to find in the northern parts, but I'm told three places in Auckers sell it - including Victoria Park New World (I've yet to seek it there)
Lucky for me though, I'm in Dunnos now, so Emerson's is easy to get!![]()
oh manim ghey !
tui is the best thoe cant beat tui i mean what a great beer and only great people drink tui, tui wins its the best.

Pretty hard to know what people want when they say "can I have a speights" and there is two different types of speights on tap. Thats like saying.. "can I have some smokes" and there is a about 20 different kinds being sold.![]()
Seems to work just fine anywhere in the South Island. Like I said - I blame some northern marketing monkey. Grrrr. Can't explain why it aggravates me so...guess 'tis true what they say - you can take the boy out of Dunedin, but you can never take the Dunedin out of the boy.Originally Posted by XxKiTtiExX
Speight's isn't gold because of its colour - it won some gold medals so long ago it's irrelevant - I guess before that time it was just 'Speight's ale'. Speight's is Speights. Old Dark is just that - Dunno of any other kind of old dark - likewise for Distinction.
That said - Speight's isn't all that shit hot (And only the draught stuff is brewed at Rattray St these days - the bottles/cans are brewed in Auckers and Chch) - don't get me wrong, 'tis OK - but for a cheapish beer that is mighty tasty and goes down easy - I go Tuborg.
should try some Harrington's Ngahere Gold for lager, or Big John for a dark ale both 9%
The label has always said 'Speight's Gold Medal Ale'.Originally Posted by Phurrball
But it is always just known as Speights down here cos that's all there was until 10 years ago or so.
As you say it won some award at I think it was some expo at Brisbane or somewhere in 188X or something.
I don't know how I know that.

True - was meaning before the 188X medal you refer to below.Originally Posted by idb

The 'GMA' variety of Speight's is their 'bread and butter' beer that they've always brewed, this is why it should be called just 'Speight's' - it's been around donkey's years. Ask for the johnny-come-lately varieties by their full name - the elder statesman deserves some respect!
Ah yes, just who was the captain of the New Zealand cricket team when they first beat England in a test series? Hmmmm?Originally Posted by Phurrball
