The ignition must be triggered from a point which would be located on the inside of that flywheel, look for a little black box with one or two wires coming out, if you think it's not the standard ignition think about where else someone would put such a thing . I don't remember seeing a battery so your system would be this type:

    * AC-CDI - The AC-CDI module obtains its electricity source solely from the alternating current produced by the alternator. The AC-CDI system is the most basic CDI system which is widely used in small engines.

I'm thinking the actual ignition power alternator coil as used in this type of system could be the problem. Check all the connections from the coil windings and us a meter to check continuity.
Just an idea, worth a crack Nigel!

Hmmmm Are you sure it is CDI?

    And not TCI

alot of bikes run TCI ignition just everyone says it CDI

CDI meaning Capacitor Discharge Ignition system
    TCI meaning Transistorised Ignition system

If you are running stator get a manual check the Resistence readings to spec

Also Check the Pulse generator, It will have a resistence reading what this does if not correct is bike may run then cut out and when left sitting for a while it works fine then when gets hot breaks down under load...

Also There is an air gap these should have from the flywheel

If the gap is to far it will not spark correctly,

If you do this check your loom, If I was you I would rewire the whole loom from stator up just for your own satisfaction that you know the loom is ok,

Check all earths are they earthing properly? Is your Earths clean?

Just check everythign yuo pissbly can,

check your ignition timing that the timing isnt out,

Also when was your plug last replaced a plug can be faulty and cause grief,
Hows your coil? No cracks in the coil? High Tension leads? Plug caps?

Just really check everything there is,

    Thanks for the advice,

I'm pretty sure that the only problem will be that the flywheel was loose. I'm hoping that once I replace the woodruff key and put the flywheel back on again I'll be away.

What I'm confused with is how to set the timing if it doesn't have points but I'm hoping that the timing doesn't actually need adjusting and that with the flywheel back on and tight it'll all work.

    Update tomorrow hopefully.

Yeah to adjust timing there is normally some line marks on the stator plate, and there will normally be a mark inside the engine were the stator goes normally you line these 2 up and that is your timing, but if it is not standered it will be differnt

Yep, like you said no other way to do it. Was the woodruff key knackered? even if it's not be prudent and use a new one.

Yip...it was shawn clean in half...half of it was floating around in the case and the other half was still in the slot on the shaft.

Got a new one today, had to guess the size so hopefully it'll fit.

That's what I thought at the Slipway, I was gunna say that I just didn't get around to it.
Two-Strokes are too simple for me. Like my brain, I like things that have lots of bits that spin round at high speed and clatter alot

If someone did Ivan, they would tell you.

Now don't be a pain in the ass like you were when you were looking for a RS125 rolling chassis.

I just scored two(2) FZR chassis. One is a later alloy beam type with everything except a tank, and the other is just an early steel one with nothing except the frame, swingarm, triple clamps, and shock. Perfect for both my dormant projects. Just got to get them home and find a little spot in the garage to put them.
