Does anyone have advice on the ideal wheel sizes for a bucket racer? I've decided that I want to get onto a better profile tire and to do that I'm pretty sure I need to change the current 18" rims.

Find the best tyres you want to pay for and then buy or build the optimum wheels for the tyres. Currently you are looking at 17' rims at about 2.15"+ wide on the front and about 2.5"+ for the rear. Depends on the type of tyres you go for. 2.25" and 3" are probably big enough for a bucket.

2.15 x 17 front with a 90/80-17 tyre and 3.5 x 17 rear running a 115 width rear would be the ideal sizes or you can run 2.5 rear rims (lots around ol' skool crossply tyre sized rim for mid eighties 250's)with the 90/80 front tyre turned around.
Good luck finding some, you'll be looking at about $200 each for the rims not including the discs or sprockets carriers etc.

If it sounds like I've done this before, you'd be right.

These don't exactly fit the specs above...but what do you think?

Or these could be good...but quite pricey.

FZR are too heavy for your bike... Go for the TZ ones - they'll be good I think. If they don't work out I'll take them off your hands for a few beers.

uggh 16 inch wheels.. not cutie cutie.

Those FZR rims are pretty good though.

Hey if your prepared to pay the amount for those FZR rims, i'll have a set of RS125 (speak SUPER light weight, and perfect bucket size) with slicks mounted for a similar price...

Ha classic I love that bit of that add, being a parent of four year old!

Glenns right no good tyres available unless you run a 3.5x 16 inch rim and know someone who works at Bridgestone or Michelin if you get my drift.

The bonus with the FZR wheels is that the front wheel comes with pretty much the whole front end. Couldn't justify that amount just on wheels...probably can't justify it regardless.

    So 17" it is.

Next you'll be looking for an alloy frame and a four-stroke to go with the wheels...

Well it couldn't last, Ivan is back to the usual unintelligible spiel.
Don't you look at my accountant.
