18 volts sounds pretty high. Believe the upper limit is generally ~15 V - had that problem on my cbr. See this thread, Vegan had similar sorts of problems:

im pretty sure it the regulator. because i have been getting the hell rotten egg stench from that area. so yep a new battery and reg should do it. wonder what theyre worth??

oh well.... seems like the problem is solved. i changed the regulator on tuesday and everything seems to have sorted itself now. just wanna say cheers for all the input.
