The vet rang this afternoon to say she'd done the x-rays and Smooch has a broken femur. It needs to be operated on - she's broken it right up by the ball and socket joint so her hind leg is basically just hanging. The cost of the operation? $400 at least. So now their bloody mongrel cat has cost me over $600 in vet's bills.

And I went to the council today to ask if they could force them to trim their trees that are blocking our view and overhanging our garage roof (where water is collected for our tank) and was told no, there is nothing they can do. So now we have to put up with a reduced view and tainted water, until they sell their house and we can hack the bloody things down before the new owners move in.

To be honest, I am not feeling particularly Christian towards them at present! I'm an atheist anyway, but I treat others with respect and these guys don't deserve any. Doesn't God smite down liars? Can anyone tell me how quickly he acts on a complaint?

I think you might find you are the christian here.

Pompus religious people are the worst kind, they hate more than they love. and they have a lot to answer for.

Yep, don't get mad, get even. Very loud and obnoxious music during their Open Homes or sales visits, perhaps?

I've taken a similar attitude towards inconsiderate neighbours, particular the ones with "play all night, sleep all day" idle lay-about teenagers. Before going to work the next day, I put a stereo outside near their boundary, and the CD player set to play the same track over and over and over....

By the way, local body bylaws differ, but generally speaking, if the neighbour's trees are overhanging your property, you can cut them yourself, back to the boundary line. However, you must throw the cuttings on to their property, they belong to the neighbour (and you don't want to be accused of theft).

    Good luck.

Try the Christian thing... Think of them as any other religion and burn them at the stake, drown them, or just invade and hack them to death!

EXACTLY!!! (I was going to make the same comments).
Cut back to the boundry line and throw the cuttings back to them. Perfectly legal.

I'm not vey often moved by posts here but you touched a cord with this one. It's just a real bummer when a member of your family gets hurt. And what makes it worse is that there is no remorse shown. I deal with these issues on the basis that karma is one of the natural laws of the universe. You can not change that which you have no control over. But attitudes cost and you can rest assured that there will be a price to pay, not for the injury of your cat but for that which has injured you. See my sig. It's a hard place to find but I think you have found it.

sorry to hear it - anyone who consistently reads your posts would know that you wouldn't willingly hurt anything so, please, don't beat yourself up about it ... you are being true to wat YOU believe to be right - unfortunately, these people proffess to be christian but aren't - that's their shame, not yours.

obviously you can't do anything that will make you dislike yourself so some of the suggestions on this thread would be 'out' methinks ----- nevertheless, you ARE entitled to defend yourself ......... hmmmmmmmm

    about the overhanging trees
---pruning is ok but the problem will recur------ a little moonlight "roundup" might work methinks .... kill the things dead and be done with it now and for ever [and get out there quick smart in future and spray anything the NEW neighbours plant that looks as though it might get out of hand]

    about the cat
......... had the same problem two houses ago - borrowed a possum trap - caught the miscreant - handed him in at an animal shelter 3 suburbs away ........ i couldn't have hurt him but honestly had to stop him tearing my own cat to shreds [and my vet's bill hadn't reached NEARLY the level yours has]

good luck whatever you decide ---- i am sure you will do the right thing

I've just got back from seeing Smooch before her operation. They have to remove the ball and socket joint and make a new joint from the top of her leg - so she'll have one leg permanently shorter than the others. Nice reminder for her of the lovely neighbours.

Their real estate agent says they have dropped the price of their house (from ridiculous to merely too bloody dear!) so hopefully they will sell. As for annoying people vieiwing it - NO, we want them to buy it!

And the trees? We did trim the branches we could reach that were hanging into our place, and we did put the trimmings neatly back over the fence - and that was one of the things he complained to the police about - so I'm not keen to try that again. We can't poison them as there are about 50 or 60 so we're stuck with them until they sell and we can top them before the new people move in.

We are at a loss to know why they have overreacted like this. Pity they didn't try this with the new neighbour across the road - the guy who owns Swazi Apparel. I can imagine him taking any crap from them - yeah, right!

Have you talked to the husband again. From what you said its just the wife that got the wrong end of the stick. Maybe you can just get her to leave?
