Goodbye Chch, fancy a farewell beer?

Yip, I'm going back to the UK. I wanted a bit of the lifestyle you have here for me, my wife and 2 kids. But the work I was told was here by many many people, is on all the skills shortage lists and that I saw on Seek is not there now. You can only watch your capital heamorrage for so so long before you have to say enough, and I've had 3 weeks work since the end of August

I don't want to do any old shit to stay, yes its a beautiful place with great people, but when I can get well paid work that I'm experienced and qualified for within 24 hours of one UK email... after 20 weeks of going through the Press, phoning agencies, going through seek and using personal contacts to no avail...it doesn't fill me with confidence that I can make a good living here. I expected a drop, not a full stop.

I don't want you thinking I'm a bitter whinging Pom. I've had a great time here, experienced your country in a way you never could from inside a camper, met some wonderful people, made some life friends and generally had a bloody ball.

Before I go I'd like to thank all the KB'ers I've met, online and in person, for being welcoming, funny, informative, insightful, reflective yada yada. You're top people, be proud of this forum

So if you're free and local do you fancy a beer in Belfast, say Thursday 9th or Friday 10th (early ish as I'll bring family), it would be good to see ya :spudwave:

    MidnightMike, thanks but no thanks

Vicky, glad you made it. I'm from Newport Pagnell, where they make Aston Martins, and while there's twats everywhere it wasn't to escape societies ills that drew us here. I prefer the Thai/Indo stuff here, kebabs are much better and chips are cooked properly not greasy mush like the UK (cod will disappear soon for barramundi!), but I'm more looking forward to a tasty and cheap Indian takeaway

Good Luck Fordy, it's a shame you have to go, but please keep in touch.

I know what you mean though. It took me three months to find work in the UK, and it wasn't "quite" in my field. I think I might have stayed a lot longer if I'd found a job I liked.

Sorry to hear Fordy. Pity there is no real work for you here. You are a damn nice guy and it would be good if you stayed, but HELL YEA, I'll come down for a beer.

Good luck Fordy - hope you can settle ok in the UK again after your experiences here. I used to teach at Cranfield Uni, just down the road from NP, so know the area well. (or used to, haven't been back for quite a while)

I'd like to see you guys, but if its not to be thats a shame. You have pm.

Blackbird Thanks. My son was born in our house on Cranfield High Street, used to be owned by Bob Kinns....Bob's connection with the Uni may be tenuous but his brother has a garage not far from campus
