Smile South Is Adventure Tour Feb-Mar

4 of us are planning to sail over 23 Feb, back 8 Mar. The loose plan at present is to go down the west coast, maybe stay at Blackball, spend 3 nights in Queenstown doing stuff like the Nevis, Mavora, Macetown, Skippers, St Bathans etc, then 2 nights in Te Anau - going out to Milford & whatever, then heading north via the Onslow/Poolburn area to Dansey's, take in the March Hare rally, then the Rainbow/Molesworth/whatever & sail back.
We'll be on a pair of DR650's, a TTR250 & my KTM, A few of our Sth Is buddies will be joining in at times. We'll be staying in cabins or similar & maybe the odd pub.

So if anybody is keen to join us for some or all of the trip speak up & I'll keep you posted as we develop firmer plans for where we are going when & accommodation bookings etc.

    Cheers
    Clint

Not toooo many sleeps left until you hit the road, how's the planning going ?

Have my entry in for the March Hare, plan on heading down Friday. If you are interested & haven't anything already planned I'm keen to hook up & make some dust with you & your team on the Saturday.

Mt Studholme, in behind the rally has a 4WD service track for the communication tower up there, 1 hour return. There are some tracks up there worth exploring, but I think it's private land other than the track up to the tower.

Just south of Waimate is Waihao Forks, hang a right there & head inland to the Pentlands Hills & through to the Haka track (Hakataramea Pass Rd). Hang a left there & drop down into Kurow. From there it's right up to Otematata (Oldrider country) & the Benmore Dam. Here there is a private (locked gate)Transpower pylon road over into the MacKenzie basin. It follows the shores of lake Benmore & climbes over two passes giving wicked views of the surrounding area. Once you have dropped down into Black Forest & Heldon stations in the MacKenzie basin you are served up with the best hard packed dirt/gravel road going. Wide with really good visability of whats ahead, one can explore the upper range of ones bikes performance.
All too soon MacKenzie Pass Rd arrives on the right & climbs out of the MacKenzie country, not before taking you pass the MacKenzie Monument, commenmorating the capture & 12 hours later, the escape of James MacKenzie. From here there are a few options, one being staying on the gravel almost right back to the rally site.

Have one other confirmed, trying to rustle up a couple more ... ANYONE INTERESTED ??? ...

Hope to catch up with you ... PLUG
... you know it's a bit windy when you get passed by your own dust ...

Yep, I'm keen. My mate (on a KLR650) and I are off to the March Hare on the Friday as well, and will be doing a back country day ride on the Sat. We haven't made plans for the destination yet, but you've suggested sounds good.

The planning is going good The sis & broinlaw are being indecisive but Paul & I will definitely be rolling off the ferry 11:45am next Thursday.
We will take a couple of days to cruise down the west coast staying wherever, then we are booked into the Frankton motor camp 25-27 Feb, doing a few day rides around Queenstown (give us a call if you want to join us Toddy) & then to Te Anau great lakes holiday park 28 Feb & 1 Mar. Then it's up the East coast, which I haven't done much planning for.
Paul's missus is keen to fly into Chch for a couple of days, visit the friends we will be staying with & join us for some riding, on or around the weekend of the Hare, so I'm letting them call the shots for that part of the trip, but it'd be great to hook up with you guys for a ride on the Saturday so we'll try & work that in.

    Cheers
    Clint
