its for show - all for the self-agrandizement of the owner [unlike humans, dogs aren't impressed by cosmetic surgery]

if this isn't a PT then the guy has an image problem
    - if he's feeling less than manly why doesn't he get - erm - enhancement surgery performed on himself instead of carving up the poor dog?

started off as a thoery way way back in the 16th centry I believe origaniolly with old mastiff type breeds in italy...believing it would make them more alert and hear better for guarding.... and it move to other breeds bred for guarding... and then became a fashionable trend for awhile among a few breeds.... now its actually illegal in NZ I'm not totally sure what has happened with tail docking yet.... but tail docking is benificial too a small number of breeds with large heavy tails that wag em fast and they hit objects and they split the tail at the end...but in most cases no benifit to the dog that vets can point out....although some owners of these breed come up with all sorts of fantasy aguments about how its benificial...

It is now against the law to nip dogs' ears and tails. No doubt there will be some neanderthal breeders who continue to prioritise fashion over animal welfare. But they will be easy to find and deal with.

No it's not. Doberman tails if left undocked are long and curl up. While it is true that docking is part of the breed's standard they are docked for practical purposes too.

I've had two dobies. Would get another but home environment is unsuitable. They can take a lot handling but if you are prepared to put in the time they make a great guard dog and a family pet too. However with most dogs you have to be careful if their are strangers in your house. That's how the dog see's your friends untill they know better.

couldn't be bothered reading all the posts so if this been said before i apologise. I can't stand dogs that have cropped ears and docked tails, not for looks but the pain the dog endures(sp) for the look. Also if you want the ears sticking up aswell as cropped the ears have to be in a kind of brace while they are a puppy to keep them pointing up later on in life. If you want a good guard dog a rhodesian ridgeback is an excellent guard dog, no training required, they were originally bred to attack lions in rhodesia. They are very brave and very loyal and very distrusting of strangers. I have wanted one for ages and have talked to alot of breeders and owners of the dog and heard many a story of a burglar(sp) being cornered and begging for help when the owner came home. Or another one when a ridgeback had a burglar held by the throat and was pinning him and everytime he tried to move the dog would tighten his grip. Need lots of food and exercise though and cost about $1000.
Any dog you get will need to be properly looked after and exercised guard dog or family pet.

The reason doberman ears are docked is so that they can not be grabbed. I am not too sure but I think it was the Germans who first cropped the ears and it was for the reasons stated. There are ways of disabling agressive dogs but you have to know what you are doing and how to do it. Cropped ears just make it that much more difficult.

Cropped ears are not part of the breed's standard and I don't think you can show a dog with cropped ears in NZ. You can in the States

Thier tails are too long and the dog has litttle control over it. In other words it can not groom the tail. That good enough for you or do you want more reasons

Tail docking is not illegal and if common sence prevails it won't be.
Working dogs of the gun dog types have their tails docked "normaly 3/4" to help prevent damage.GSP's Visla's and other pointers regularly break their tails by hitting them against trees, branches ect. These dogs are made up breeds, they havn't naturaly developed and their tails are very light and easily damaged.
Some of these breeds have been selectivly bred for so long they are now often born without tails in much the same way some cattle are born polled today.
There's a lot of misinformation being put about on these subjects,,having people that are addicted to using big words in an atempt to make themselfs look more intelligent than they really are doesn't help.
