actually turn up at my house with ya rusty stanleyknife an ill take your own advice. i would be prepared to use equal and necesary force to protect myself etc. stanley knife weighs as much as a 303 bullet right. so its equal. right?
MIKEY IF YOU REALLY FEEL THAT YOU NEED PROTECTION MAYBE YOU CAN BE SOMEONES BITCH .
SERIOUSLY IF YOU WANT A DOG TO PROTECT YOU GET A GERMAN SHEPARD FEMALE , THEY TEND TO BE MATERNAL AND PROTECT THEIR OWNERS

Nah, probably got more self preservation instinct than maternal instinct and will shoot-through as soon as it can!!

What's all this first time owner crap. Unless you train dogs for a living, or you get rid of them after a few years how many dogs will you own in a lifetime?? My first dog only managed 16 years and the second 17.5, so my 3rd dog should see me through till I'm 60 (when I'm ready and able to have another).

As for the cropping/docking issue. Not one for ears I can't think of any justification from a working dog point of view. If the tail was an issue in guard/attack dogs then I guess police dogs would all have short coats and no tail, but they don't. So I guess it's still a fashion thing.

Personally if I wanted my property guarding I'd have 2 dogs. A lot of people think they can handle 1 dog, but 2 gives em something else to think about.

Get a "MEAN" dog, be "MEAN" to it, and you have a dog that will be "MEAN" when you need it too, sure theres the risk you might need a face trasnplant when it goes you, but just make the dog fear you. Kick it in the head a few times, they call it "tough love".

These two photos show what ear croppers are trying to achieve (mostly) and what it invariably turns out like.
