My definition of the various relationships, mainly for amusement but these do extrovert my own opinion. If you find a spelling mistake, fuck you, yah' educated prick, in advanced.

    Marriage
Gauranteed sex for majority of life span, however quality and quantity are sacraficed.

    Love
State of mind arroused by physical and mental attraction to opposite or same sex with sexual motivations. Often thawrted as gushy moments of belly spun butterflies, exotic occasions of romance and an attempt to buy the world out of chocolates, jewellery and flowers.

    Companion
Someone who you genuinely apreciate as a person and can accomodate as a part of your life. Their attention and opinion means a lot to you. You find plenty of joy and satisfaction from their company and when thinking of certain tasks or objectives consider them as a significant link in those tasks or objectives.

    Friend
Just another person who needs friends, like everyone else, to help them feel wanted and adored, usually with false perceptions. Their opinion of you will alternate depending on the influence of other friends and your actions within a particular circle of friends. They will provide company in numbers on occasions as no one likes to be a loner, so to speak, but would happily ditch you for higher-class/more popular friends.

    MATES
Always a phone call away. Keen to help you whatever the price, never expectant or demanding. Mutual connections, flow of shared information, desire to help one another acheive higher standards and position in life. Always forgiving. Foundation of trust through complete honesty and apreciation of fellow mates. Rare to find.

After having been with the same woman for 20-odd years, I'm probably not qualified to answer this.

Hmmm interesting Swantiger... I would put Love and Companion together. Can't be one without being the other. Mates, yep agree with that. My actual circle of Mates/TRUE friends is only about 12-15 people but the circle of "Acqaintances" is pretty vast. When it comes to the crunch I know who I can count on..

I'm gonna ask the big question.

What does love / romance / marriage mean to you?

when you first go out you say you love her to get some loving even though you prob dont mean it.

    then you get the romance.

then you get marriage and normally you do love them but even if you say it you dont get any loving so then you buy them something for valentines day trying to buy a root.
then once you been married for a bit and got kids you cant even buy some loving from your wife.

so then you have an affair and get caught
    then split up
    then start the process again.
    hahaah

What does Love / Romance / Marriage mean to me?

Well, I won't go into the first two, but what is marriage? Really? Apart from the obvious, you know, committing to one person for life. Modern marriage really isn't all that different from what marriage has always traditionally been - coming together before whichever god you happen to believe in and asking that he bless your union. Marriage is a ritual of the religious, it shouldn't be any surprise that nearly everyone who is qualified to "marry" is some form of religeous leader. "With God as my witness, I now..."

So to me, marriage means nothing. I don't need to appear before anyone's god, nor do I need a legal document affirming that we belong to each other. Funnily enough, that's basically what a Civil Union is - takes religion out of the equation. I read an interesting article about a couple that were the first heterosexual couple to do that, and that's exactly why they wanted to have a C.U, because it took religion out of it.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love my partner to bits and I'm more than happy to stay with her for the rest of my life. She's a hell of a catch and I'm not about to give her up for anything, not even a difference in opinion on marriage. Trouble is though, little girls don't grow up dreaming of their perfect Civil Union now, do they?!?

Too true and often you don't find out until it is too late...
