Nah. There's plenty of life left in analogue scanners yet. Even when the police do eventually buy a digital radio system, unless they fork out even more money for decent encryption system, you can buy digital scanners that'll allow you to hear pretty much everything but the most sensitive operations (druggie busters etc). I'll even sell you one. I'll charge a fortune for it as well. Or you could Google and buy a half decent one from the states, and save a truck load of money to boot.

Chances are they'll out out any new radio system in the three major cities first anyhoo. And that's unlikely to begin happening for another 2 years +.

Part of me can understand why its a good thing, but the major chunk of me screams "bugger this!"

I spent alot of my teens/early 20's listening to cop scanners. Great entertainment they are. Makes it heaps easier to go rubbernecking at crime scenes, when your bored you just listen to the scanner and drive from crime to crime. When the cops pull you over (and when your a car full of gents in black jeans with shaved heads they do that an awful lot), you can sit and listen to them telling base they are on a traffic stop with suspicious person, and giggle hysterically over having soem stupid little thing over them.

Listening in to everything the cops are doing is a goddamn national past time, dont change it!

The fun thing is when you suspect there is a scanner in the car and you say something derogatory about one of the occupants on the air while you're back in the 'work' car - and then when you go back to speak to them that person can't resist complaining about what they heard being said about them - and all his mates start punching him and hissing "shutup ya dick, they'll know we have a scanner" or say "ha ha, he called you a..."
