Did my longest ride to date yesterday - 180KM out to Waiuku/Kariotahi Beach/Awhitu Peninsula/Ardmore! Thanks to Terbang for riding shotgun on his Busa!
The things I learnt...
1. The police will take an interested look at you with an L Plate, but merely to observe how you are riding - if you look like you know what you are doing, then no probs
2. Tailgating earthmoving trucks will back off if you ease on the brake enough to get the light on![]()
3. The roads out on the peninsula are not the best conditions, so drive according to what is beneath/around you - I had my share of road works, mowers, cyclists, pedestrians, 4WD's, and pull-outs from side roads
4. How tiring it can be with all that concentration - looking where you want the bike to go, staying about 10 seconds ahead of it, bugs hitting the helmet
What a rush it was! Really looking forward to Sundays newbie ride - and my first real ride on the Southern/Northwestern Motorways to get to our arranghed meeting place
Onward and upward I say!
Cheers
4. Maintaining speed in traffic flow
