Why don't we have a "TT" in NZ??

Why doesn't someone start a road race event in NZ? A bit longer than Paeroa or the other locations - Like a Targa rally but for bikes. Maybe down south somewhere nice and quiet. Or did there used to be such a thing and it was stopped?

Could also have a mad sunday event, I know the ultra safe PC brigade would have a fit but its personal choice. If youre going to hoon it what better time - first aid will be close at hand, and you won't take anyone else with you.

In tauranga theres this perfectly good piece of road with a toll on it that hardly gets used, why they cant close it down for a day in the weekend and have a open event for bikes, you sign the disclaimer, you pay the entry, you donate to saint johns, then clock up some serious speeds. They would make more money in one weekend than they make all month. Or even make it part of a targa event like you sugest. Plenty of riders out there wanting to play....

I asked "why no Targa for bikes?" a little while ago but all the sad, lonely, fun police and nay sayrs had a big cry and told me all the reasons not to have one...
I didn’t want to know why not, I wanted to know how!
I still think its a cool idea, they used to have one on Waiheke Island befor it got over run with poncy wankers and back stabbing criminals (I used to live there, hence the bitterness)
A Southern Hemisphere version of the Isle of Man? The South Island has a shit load of nice roads... The world’s most southern road race?

There are a few roads that would work well, how about the old tar hill road south of toke? its 3 lanes in alot of places and completely unused. Probably a bit short though!

Yeah, our TT was on Waiheke Island,I used to ride or walk the ''mountain'' section everyday to go to work.It was gravel then, one of the roughest roads on the island, doing it everyday was fun.The whole TT course was around the block for me.

I'm sure I asked this question once and was told there used to be a Targa type event but too many deaths and injuries lead to it rapidly being closed.

I wonder if it would be possible to start an IOM TT type event ANYWHERE in the world now. People couldn't stomache the inevitable deaths. I also wonder if the only thing that has saved the IOM is the history behind it and the massive tourist revenue it would bring in.

    We've all gone soft

Yeah, lets hope they never kill it on the IOM. Everyone knows the risks, up to them if they take them.

Lets face it- there are guys and girls out there having their own little TT experience every weekend.

One of the things that keeps the drivers in check (mostly) in the Targa is the co-driver- kinda difficult to do on a bike. BUT with GPS technology, couldn't the riders have pace notes delivered to them via a completely un-flappable pre-recorded voice? It could be programmed to advise when the rider is going in too hot as well. The only problem would be when the pace notes are incorrect and something goes wrong.
