The route via backroads from Levin, through to Shannon and then Opiki to (SH3) Feilding is a good alternative. Breaks up the monotony of SH1, unless you like long straights.

We coulda done with this yesterday morning while trying to find the right entrance at 6 in the morning. Fricking hard to find in the rain and darkness.
Wish I hadn't found it though, it turned out.

maxxed the R6 out on 'stewarts road' just watch out for the abrupt corner and stop sign at the end of the straight as it comes up to the Fielding road.
