Stunts take skill and practice
Only pulled a wheelie once on the road... by mistake.
Took off faster than usual on my XR500

Not got much coordination for that stuff but on the farm bike it was easy to wheelie all the way across the paddock and didn't get hurt or damage the bike when I fell off.
Too old now to have to impress anyone even myself.
But I do enjoy good stunts done well, if they go bad... they knew the odds

Just because a road is signed 100, doesnt mean it is safe to do 100. Riding to the conditions....I'm not saying it wasnt safe to do 70, but the state isnt going to tell you how fast to ride everywhere at all times. Road signs are a guideline, not a rule. But i'm sure you know that.
I take it the gravel was a newly sealed section of road done in chipseal, with the excess still on there....I take it you have ridden on NZ roads before, and therefore know what to expect. Chipseal is cheaper and easier, and roadsigns get stolen. This is what being a good rider is about... Being able to anticipate these things, if possible, and avoid crashing. Ok, accidents happen, but when you go riding, so do unexpected things, and it is the *rider's* responsibility to look after themselves, not the state's responsibility to provide a perfectly safe road surface.
This is what they are attempting to do on some main roads eg SH1 around auckland, and I believe that this is the exact same reason why bikers avoid these very roads.

On one side Im thinking -Us bikers have a bad enough rep out there with the non biker community without them getting to see us proving it.
Before you guys say so what ---those non bikers are the one passing the laws that keep us on or off the roads.
On the other hand it looks to me that the "stunts" were out in the countryside and it looks like there were spotters so the only thing the riders would hit was the road not some innocent cage driver.

Waste of a perfectly good ZX-9R (or is it a 12?) Did the guy die as a result of that one then?

My take on the stunting on public roads thing? I've never wheelied the FXR on a public road... I may do some day for the entertainment value if I find myself in the mood for it while pulling away beside another rider, or wotnot. I don't quite see any Ultimate Evil involved. The only person that is really at risk is the rider himself (stunting with pillions on board should be Right Out). In the end, if we're all going to criticise each other for putting ourselves at risk, why are we riding bikes? Buy a Volvo.

It's still important to cultivate an attitude of humility about one's skills. If you don't crash, well and good, but if you bugger things up and hurt yourself or, heaven forbid, someone else, you better hope you've paid enough tax in the last few years to cover the public healthcare you're about to consume. And don't expect either sympathy or opprobrium from me. Your choice to take the risk. Not my problem.

So when are you going to upgrade the FXR JR? ...250cc, 600cc, or Volvo?

When I (a) have a full license and (b) can afford something good enough to bother.

Confession: I've kinda grown to like the FXR and its 29 or so bhp. It's very good at what it does, which is commuting, low-speed back road riding and not falling apart. Obviously I'd *rather* have a bigger bike, but I'm not particularly unhappy. I might even just ride it until it wears out, which would be a terribly unsexy and unfashionable thing to do, I know.

Yeah... we all have to deal with that, though. The *real* cost of owning the bike you want often includes the purchase price of a shiny cage to keep SWMBO happy.

I tried to stick one on my helmet but it wasn't flexible enough to stick on without wrinkling so I've stuck it on the white number plate board on the front of my WR and I'm happy to leave it there. I haven't put one on the VFR because there isn't really a suitable place to stick it without it messing up the clean lines.

As for everyone going on about people binning their bikes, I'm guessing this always happened especially back in the 70's when so many rode bikes and they didn't handle well, but we never had the internet then and we only got to know about stupidity (or is that daring exploits?) through word of mouth.

Still it was a shame to see the new Honda wrecked like that.

Its a 12R and no idea of the outcome but i would assume more than ones pride was hurt.
I don't know why I surf sport bike sites when I prefer cruisers
