Is it a sport? Is it f-

Rather than go all O/T on OAB's Ice Hockey thread, I really needed to unburden myself on this commonwealth games bollocks.

    1) NZ gets a bronze medal for synchronised swimming.
Woo, f-ing hoo. No doubt our tax dollars will now be subsidising the manufacture of sequinned swimsuits, nose clips and waterproof makeup....this is not a sport, neither is anything else that depends some some bunch of blazers of a junket deciding who's better. That goes for gymnastics too.

    2) Australia tops the medal table. Right, it's time this swimming malarky was sorted out, having all these different strokes is a waste of time, as if it wasn't boring enough watching eight splashes moving slowly up and down a pool, I mean we don't have 100m for running backwards or hopping in the athletics program do we?

    3) The Haka. Everytime some athlete you've never heard of wins we have to put up with their team mates taking their shirts off and doing a bloody haka. We need legislation now to prevent this, there are two acceptable venues for the Haka, before an AB's test match and pissed Kiwis on OE in Edinburgh for New Years.

I feel much better now, thanks for listening.

    1 & 3 have merits, however there is running/hurdles/steeplechase, 100, 200, 400, 1500, 3000m, 5000m, 10000m, marathon, 20k walk, 50k walk, so running has it's issues too....

not to mention hammer, discus, shotput, javelin, high, long, pole and triple jump, all just variations on a theme.

    then there's cycling.............

I have to agree with you here. We've got the games on at work and I find it B-O-R-I-N-G. I think I even saw Bowls this morning - WTF? It wouldn't surprise me to see Tiddlywinks.

Of course Australia are kicking our asses. They have a very competitive approach to education and sport. We on the other hand, teach our kids that winning is evil and we have far too many academics involved in sports.

As for the haka, yip, save it for Rugby. To others, it's just a bunch of muntleys taking off their clothes and poking their tongue out. Embarrassing.

    Ahh get over yourself.

They're all sports so what does it matter whether they are in the Commonwealth Games or not. Turn it off if you don't want to watch.

As far as I can see, synchronised swimming has to be one of the most physical sports at the Games. Let's see you hold your breath for two minutes underwater while propelling yourself upside down with your toes pointed. No, I didn't think so.

I didn't say it wasn't difficult, it's just not a sport. If people want to watch that shit they should flood a theatre and sell tickets.

My theory is that Olympic/Commonwealth games events should kinda reflect the basics in the Human Being's abilities:
    1. We used to throw spears and shit at animals to survive: Archery, Javelin, gun stuff etc.
    2. Running fast def has merits.
    3. Strength sports def.
    4. Gymnastics yes, pretty basic form of physical pursuit, but not rythmn gym. Its dance, bloody difficult Im sure.

I reckon Syncronised swimming is about as virtuous and relevant as Ballroom Dancing as an Olympic/Games sport.

Stronger, Further, Faster. Not none of those attributes at the same time as someone else.
