    Angry Battery Help Required

Went out this morning to start the bike and nothing... just a little whurr and then not a bean..... This has happened before and I just got the AA out to jump start the bike and it was going all good untill now.

So knowing nothing about bikes and batterys what is the best course of action, just take it to a shop or is these some way I can figure out if it is actually the battery or something more serious?

Probably a real blonde query, but hey you don't know unless you ask

EDIT: The AA guy just tested the battery and its not holding its charge...... he recons it might the the alternator??? Any thoughts on how many $$ this might cost and best place to take it...........

    Cool

Can you get the battery off and take it to a shop to get the battery tested ?

Batteries tend to go in winter, so it may be that you will need a new one.

Also there must be one of the lads in Chch with a battery tester if you cant get it to a shop.

Good luck in getting it sorted out.

    Battery prob

Just look up battery specialists in the 'let your fingers do the walking' & call into one. They will check the battery under load & replace if needed. Suggest a phone arround for prices (check battery model No on battery first).

Vaughn from Mainland batteries is a motorcyclist, has a GSXR1000. The Wellington crew know him well, anyway they offer a mobile service. He should be able to help you out. (We use them here and I've got batteries off him for my bikes.)

My advice - just get the battery tested by someone - it wont cos tyou anything and you'll know straight away f it's your battery - or something more sinister like you rectifier (i fucked around and had my bike off the road for TOOO long).

If the battery's not holding a charge, the battery's worn out. Simple as. Shows up at this time of year. Just jump start the bike, go to a battery place or auto sparky. They'll check the battery , check your charging, supply and fit a new battery. Batterys run about $60 - $100 depending on size, where you go.

    Ah,I see it's a Honda...let me count the ways.....

The battery will be stuffed by now, most likely the regulator/rectifier is faulty, and it may have taken out the stator as a worst case.

Worst case scenario is what happened to me - took out the stator and some of the loom too. - it wasn't cheap to fix - I didn't do it myself though....

    Lightbulb

The GPZ I just brought had been sitting in garage for two years. Battery was dead. Even after fully chargeing it up, it showed 12V's, but wouldn't turn over the bike motor.
So I emptyed out the acid, then added 3 table spoons of Epsom salts (Magnesium Sulpate) into the acid. Mixed it up, pored it back in battery, charged it up, and hey presto,,, battery is now starting the bike easy. Left it sitting for 4 days, Still started the bike easy.
This is a trial in progress, so well let you know how long it works for. Really just a short term fix.

    Racey.

Definitely ring around for battery quotes. Prices can vary by 50% and warranty terms by 75%. Pick the one which suits your budget and requirements.

Quote the battery numbers, not the bike.
90% of the time spent writing this post was spent thinking of something witty to say. It may have been wasted.

I got a new yuasa battery from casbolts last year for a reasonable price. My old honda had a similar sound problem and it was just that the battery was shot.

Ok everyone has pointed you in various directions for a new battery so I will add my input on that one Budget Spares, they we the cheapest by about $10 when I needed a new battery.

As to the AA man saying that the alternator might be the issue when its a flat battery well that a hasty judgement with no sound basis, batteries last 2-5 years (5 nowdays for some reason seems to be an impossable target), its a fact of life, as was suggested colder weather does have an effect, and can cause a battery that yesterday was fine to fail, and tomorrow after a charge it will work fine, bad news there is well the battery is ready for a funeral.

On another note the battery load tester that most garages carry is far to harsh for motorcycle batteries and actually discharge them too fast and this test is inaccurate
Its not the destination that is important its the journey.
