I'm with MxDm here. My formative driving years were spent thrashing the Old's 1.5 Civic. 66kW. The GN of the car world. And to highlight the differences between that and a modern turbo rocket...
I used the coast rd wainui as a bit of late night entertainment in the civic. Had it pace noted, then had it memorised. Knew the braking points, lines, gears... But as with all things in life, I moved on to other things and didn't spend so many late nights on lonely roads. So at the age of... ahem... 25 I rocked up to the coast rd one night in the 323 turbo (the BG 1800 4WD model), trying to scare the pants (literally) off a little hottie who liked speed. A particular corner that was "flat out" on the civic... which given the run up available from prev corners, etc, meant about 140k. I rocked up to it in the 323 flat out, hit a bump mid-corner, car flicks out completely sideways at - get this - 195km/h! It was one of those split second things, quick whack of opp lock and it's all good again. But if the "split second" timing had been a little out, then the little car would have landed on the golf course. And the father of the little hottie (who thought I was the man for that move) would've broken whatever bones of mine the accident didn't break.
So if that's what an driver with rallying experience can nearly do in a 140-odd kW 323, how exactly do you expect kids of today in a 200kw+ WRX or EVO to live for long? And let's face it, EVERYONE can afford a WRX these days.
In case you're wondering about the outcome of that wee escapade - even though I admitted it was a mistake and I'd nearly killed her, I still achieved the objective.
