I took one for a blat ages ago, seemed to have a decent amount of grunt for a 250, no different, certainly no slower than CBR 250s, can't speak for ZXRs.
The one I rode handled and stopped nice. People did complain about electrics,
but if the price was alright, I wouldn't let that stop me

I would just ignore the ratings, they are all over the show, one thing i will say is i don't see many of the older ones around, now whether thats due to owners writing them off or them lunching themselves i don't know, but if it did die, you could always put a gsxr400 engine in it

I can only give you my opinion and tell ya what I've been told.
I've taken one for a decent test ride (Wgtn to Upper Hutt & back) and was quite surprised. I expected a relatively sluggish bike but it was quite good. Bearing in mind it's a 250 and not something bigger. It handled well enough and I thouht a good bike for a learner or smaller rider. They seem to be pretty reliable from what I've been told. There are also enough of them around to get bits for and from. My standard rule of thumb is that if there are plenty of them around then that's a good thing. The thing is that they wouldn't be popular if they were shit.

Top speed should be less of a consideration than how fast it can get there, and how well it handles when throwing it around. The fact that there are still heaps of them out there is testimony to their relative reliability. They do not appear to be heavy at about 136kg dry & with 45hp on tap should be quite quick. hXc's Spada is about same weight but with Vtwin & under 40hp is still quite respectable in the performance stakes. If the one you are looking at is in good going condition and price is right ($??) what is stopping you?

It was black with gold decals, maybe c1990,16valve, It redlined at 17500, and the owner used to take it way past that maybe 20000+ anyway it could shift along when ridden by a malnourished teenager, maybe 160-170 kph, not as fast as my NSR, or my mates Impulse, or a KR1-S, but he was always in the mirrors, I never saw it break down, though I did see it go into a culvert at 100k+, however the owner did (literally) detonate 3 motors on this bike by abusing shit out of it, he used to cane it mercilessly and every so often it would chuck a leg out of bed and stop in a huge puddle of oil!
I seem to remember it being quite rideable with a pillion on the open road too, still faster than most cars, not bad for a 250 eh?
I heard that the GSXR was one of the stronger 250 4s due to having a camchain instead of gear drive like the CBRs, people who were into bikes in Dunedin in the mid 90s may remember this bike haring around in various states of repair, usually in pursuit of (just as rough)a NSR250R, Suzuki Impulse, and a Kawasaki KR1-S, If you do remember us, then bear in mind that we were only schoolboys, and wer'nt pissing you off on purpose!!

If it seems ok, and the price is right then buy it, but don't let it incourage you to ride like a twat, your'e much less likely to get away with it today.
