Here's Hitcher's solution to this whole two-roll nonsense. Brace yourselves. Be amazed at its simplicity, brilliance and downright cunning. And, best of all, it's legal!

Every eligible voter in New Zealand enrols on the Maori Roll.

    Easy, eh!

That way we get one Electoral Roll and no fannying around determining "equitable" numbers of seats in Parliament based on "race". And Statistics New Zealand can ask one less set of questions in the Census.

My big challenge is talking the intransigent muddled masses of middle New Zealand into this. Such is life...

No you can not just enroll on the maori roll. You need to provide proof of your whakapapa. Proof may be records or testomony.

I'm sorry, we are not allowed to have an opinion on this matter - to do so would be deemed as being 'racist'. Anything to do with commenting on any vaguely racially based issue is racism if you are of European decent.
Why do we have the Maori electoral role? To appease the shit stirrers probably. There aren't Samoan, Tokelau, Indian, Chinese, Iranian, .... electoral roles. If it was suggested then you'd get laughed at. Oh but wait, the Maori are the indegenous people of this land... NO they're not!! So what if they arrived here before the European settlers? By the Maori's own historical memories they are immigrants to NZ. Enough of the divisive politics. One role for one people. NZ has been built from the strengths of all the people (of different races) who've come and does not belong historically to any one group.

Yep that'll do. That's the mountain covered. Now all you need is the river and your waka.

No, That rule was changed some time ago. You only have to provide proof if you are claiming part of a Waitangi settlement. Just identifying yourself as Maori is sufficient to enroll on the maori electoral roll.

The form to choose between Maori and Genral rolls was sent to all people who identified themselves as Maori on the census form. No proof of ancestry is required. Others may request a change form if they wish to change rolls, and again, no proof of ancestry is required.

Hitcher's solution may just work. Unless, that is, All maori elect to be on the general roll and all non maori elect to be on the maori roll.
