UK - motorcycles recognised as aids to safety and emergency teams

More authorities seem to be waking up to the fact that motorcycles have a valuable role to play in keeping us all safe and sound.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service are introducing a pilot scheme where a crew manager is sent ahead by motorbike to assess the situation. Being easier to move through traffic, it is likely to be first on the scene allowing the manager to assess the situation to prepare crews before they arrive.

The Fire Service already uses a motorbike to attend automatic fire alarms in Liverpool city centre and, when not in use, it displays fire safety messages at schools and community events.

And a BMW 1200 GS - complete with strobe lights, mobile phone, fire extinguisher, first aid kit and Variable Message Sign (VMS) – is being introduced in a bid to assist drivers and clear incidents from strategic roads in the Midlands.

The Highways Agency feel the rider will be able to navigate congested traffic and reach the accident site more quickly than conventional units, and assess what other personnel and equipment are likely to be needed - saving time, and providing help exactly where it is needed.

Lets see more of these types of schemes introduced - the more beneficial motorcycles are seen in everyday life, hopefully will produce a knock-on effect where we're not treated like the dirt off people's shoes.

I think its a bloody brilliant idea... but why is it normally BMW's? I mean... don't they want it to be 'faster' through traffic?
