Sat-Nav system goes crackers in… Crackpot!

Bikers and other road users using a satellite navigation system, are being warned to be careful if they are using it to tour the Yorkshire Dales.

Visitors to the Dales are being directed on to a steep unclassified road, impassable to normal road vehicles and with a 100ft drop on one side. The clue that something has gone wrong with the mapping system should be the no through road sign and five-bar gate that has to be opened before reaching the gravel track at the appropriately named village of Crackpot, between Swaledale and Wensleydale. Local farmers are towing vehicles out using their tractors as normal rescue vehicles cannot use the path.

The local authority is considering revising the signs to the track, and Trafficmaster has said that it will amend its mapping database.
