No-one starves these unfortunates. It is, by definition, self-inflicted.
The causes of it are also internal.
Perhaps we need a bit more judgement and less, " understand me, don't judge me, I'm a victim".

    wow

most interesting topic shazz has started here, yes and i am fully aware of this eating disorder, as i was shazz's mate for six years,, through the highs and the very low's of our partnership,, and as a support person, i understand that it can only come from within that person on their choice to decide,
and to not be able to feed with love, caring, commemtent, support, rules, requirements, forcing, pushing, honestly, there is not much else a support can do, other than stand beside them and await for them, to decide

Obviously Shazz was able to overcome the disorder. I would be very interested to know how she came to that point where she recognised the key. Knowledge is power, because knowledge gives choice, whereas ignorance leaves one powerless. In depression, it is necessary to be able to recognise the triggers and understand that the resultant crashing low is merely a symptom of the illness and not a reflection of reality. If you do write your story, Shaz, I'll be interested to know how you were able to learn the triggers and deal with them. Unless one has personal knowledge/experience of mental illness I guess it is hard to undertand. I used to have somewhat of a similar view to Sarge, although I always considered myself to be empathetic. ED is not a simple choice of self-infliction, neither is depression. It is a genuine illness just as any other. It also is not a sign of lack of intelligence. I used to dismiss anti-depressants as a crutch for the weak, too. I do a lot of study and research being reluctant to accept other's opinions on serious or controversial subjects regardless of how convinced they may be. My own experiences with the medical profession have left me very skeptical of the state of medical knowledge. I should have been dead on at least two occasions. Why I'm alive now is a medical mystery. The most earnest people can be completely wrong. If you are supporting someone in like situations, too, don't be too quick to assume your advice and encouragement is being completely ignored if it doesn't get the results you may desire straight away. The sufferer will be considering it in the context of their mental state at the time and with kindly repetition and acknowledgement of their opinions, time and patience can work wonders. They will be always grateful for the ones who continued to stand by them and help them through even when it may have seemed hopeless.

I work in an inpatient psychiatric unit, get to deal with mental illnesses all the time. As for the EDs, not its not the diet that can kill them, but the health complications that are the problem from a lack of nutrition.
Bit of mud slinging here and emotions. I actually agree with the above post, but whatever the problem, bagging those with the disorder ain't the solution. Getting the individual to admit there is a problem is half the solution. Those pictures of wimmin earlier are sick and so are those who find them attractive. However rather than being judgemental, how about helping those with a ED? Once they are ready to admit there is a problem and accept help, its a hard road to recovery. The cause is psychological and when the problem first arrives and is identified, making a big deal out it just reinforces the behaviour. Often its the only form of control the young teenager has, while trying to become independant. Very rarely EDs come about because of peer pressure, or the want to loose weight. I'd post more info but I have a broken collarbone and typing is difficult. Oh, EDs are an axis 2 mental illness for those wondering. The phrase "understand me, don't judge me, I'm a victim" is OK, provided they accept they are also the problem and seek out appropriate help. Otherwise its often a complete cop out...
Those who insist on perfect safety, don't have the balls to live in the real world.

I understand and feel for ya. Not long ago my weight dropped bellow 100kgs, i was barely eating four meals a day. today, i'm sitting around 111kgs, eating six meals a day (about 6000 calories), and i'm starting to feel great.

It's not nice having a eating disorder. Anyone who wishes to chat, just PM me.

sincerely hope you've put more effort into that than you did into writing your story.

    Please Stop!

This has been enough please, it is hurting and I am seriously worried about the slinging that is going on.
I have suffered through this disease, and it is a disease! for over 6 years now, along with depression and the mental issues that are involved it has been a hell of a long road.
I am not over it, but I am searching for knowledge so that i can assist myself.
I am 45 kgs and over 40 years old. Not healthy at all, half my body organs have destroyed themselves, my bowels are seriously damaged, my teeth have nearly all fallen out, my skin is old before my time, my hair is stringy and breaks and falls out easily. I suffer from headaches, body aches, collapses, lack of energy, lethargy and heaps of other issues that i just don't feel this is the correct place to discuss.
When I was born I was told that I was fat, ugly and worthless, after years and years of being told that, you have only one belief, because you do not know and have not been able to learn of any other! This then becomes a mental issue correct, but it is how a human being can dictate and control with words.
The words spoken here are hurtful to others! The bruises have faded, but the words continue to sting!
There needs to be understanding of this, not ridicule and negativity.
You can not imagine what it is like, and my quest was to chat with others that have been through it, not have to read the crap.
I thank all those who have shown compassion sincerely and stick a finger in the eye of those smart arses, cause people like you make this disease hide, and therefore people die because they are so afraid of judgements.
I did not need to hide anymore and therefore I will stand up and say ... Hi I am Shazz and I have bulimia.

Hi shazz- i did a doco. about 7 years ago on a buddy who'd been annorexic for over 12 years. was an inpatient at manawaroa, then dn. south, then an outpatient... lovely woman who was formerly a school teacher. one hard thing about it for according to her was that she wore out many of her friends-who couldn't manage the constant suicide attempts that went with it. then eventually her only real consistant care was from people who were payed to do it in institutions... her depression and suicide attempts and eventually attacks on orderlies resulted in over 1000 paramedic call-outs over the years. she had a period of relative wellness for 2 years in between, but sadly relapsed. she had some of the organ collapses you describe and then some... but eventually (last year) she did take herself into the next life under extremely horrific circumstances. (actually in your area/ manawatu). it's a terrible disorder and a total robber of the joys of life- and whatever you've managed to beat of it- is good. these forums are tricky sometimes - w a few boystrous lads and lassies - but good on you for posting & if you want the doco i can send it down.

i just think we're all in various states of disrepair in this madhouse world & who's to judge?

I think its cool that you are at a point where you feel you have conquered this disease - but sometimes the rest of the worlds own time frame to understand what you have been through isn't the same as your time frame (if ever).
Therefore when you are bold to announce to the rest of the world (i.e., Kiwibiker site) what you have overcome...you will get an amount of encouragement but equally an amount of discouraging comments - so be aware when going into the full arena of society and making such an announcement to them that they may not feel the same way as you do or be empathetic and happy about it. I think the disease will always be hidden regardless of peoples reactions to it.

I'm sorry you had this. But I personally think you have made a great achievement - such an announcement even to your closest freinds/family takes a lot of courage!

PM me if you want to chat privately

I have recently had the privelage to have met Shazzy, and yeh .... shes been/going through a lot and .... looking past what shes going through to look at Shazzy I saw one of the most awesome people I have met in a long time.
I saw someone that has been through things you wouldnt wish on your worst enemy yet shes caring, hospitable, soft and sweet and Im proud to have met her.

She has asked that the posts be ceased and I think as fellow bikers we should have more respect and stop the 'seemingly critical' comments.
I personally believe that everyone of us has issues in our lives and I have the fortunate position of remembering the 'hippy era' where people embraced others and loved them for who they are not how they looked, what they wore, what they believed, what they done. I think society could learn an important lesson from the socalled "rejects of the 60s" where they saw others as people and embraced them.
So a BIG HUG to you Shaz, you have a vision and a dream, one that will help others, go for it and I hope there are others that will support and encourage you in it.
