eek Anti Virus stuff for my PC - HELP!!

Help! I've just done a free scan thing on my PC that McAfee offer & it's told me I have viruses. I have Nortons but it's never picked anything up and I must confess at this point that I'm a real PC Blonde (no offence blondies!).

Obviously I need to update my Anti Virus hoo haa but, who is the best & what do I do in the mean time?

Oh yeah - poor hard up Uni student here who can't afford to spend lots.
My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

    Download AVG from here: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Install it and run the update. It's free and it works. Its about 6 hours behind Norton and the other major providers, but because its free I'll put up with that.

Download Nod32 - a NZ prog that rates highly. Go to www.pcworld.co.nz and they will link you through to it

Nod doesn't get updated with the same frequency as AVG. I like NOD's heuristic capabilities though.

Yeah, i got AVG running on this comp and haven't had any problems. Do a scan and find out what viruses you have. If you can find out the names of them go to the Norton site, www.sarc.com and download the removal tools, you will probably have to do a search for the virus name.

I think the AVG site has removal tools aswell, but I find the norton site better.

    Good luck.

Whilst not a virus, 'spybot' and 'ad-aware' are good to have close by too.
And www.zonealarm.com is a good firewall.
    Good luck

I'm with Jim, I use avg it's great and free, while you are at it download the free version of adaware ( a spyware removal program) and run it thru your pc, you will be amazed at how much faster your computer goes after all the spyware is removed. cheers Lucy

Hi Celtic, Like you i have been fighting viruses non stop despite having a norton subscription. Im now using avg too but the best thing i found for dealing with the numerous trojan viruses i've had was the trendmicro.com site. It doesn't offer protection it is a Detection only, but it does tell you how to get rid of any virus you get. Go to that site and do a free on-line scan, then follow the removal instructions. The biggest help is to do a regular update of your virus protection (at least weekly) and a regular scan too. Good luck.

ZoneAlarm threw a burk at our multiple users of windows. We now use TinyPersonalFirewall. Free and works ok

Trend is prob the best Virus app around at the moment. they are very quick with new definitions. nortons is still a good product. If your still getting virus's then Id say its not setup right, or (no offence) you may think you a virus but actually dont really. People tend to throw the word virus around willy nilly when they have computer problems.
Unfortuanately most firwalls wont stop spyware. so running spybot occasionally (which in my opinion is the best one around) is a good idea.
Also. some virus programs find what equates to spyware and reports it as being a virus, but it cant remove them.

Celtic. If you need some help give me a yell.

I put black ice on mine and it seemed to stop a lot.
Only problem with anti virus programs --as fast as they are loaded on some smart ass is figuring out a new virus or trojan to get arrond em
    Ya need to constantly update.
Or ya could always stop visiting those porn sites
