    There can be no such thing as 'greatest rock band ever'. It's too opinionated, and as you can see from recent top 40 lists most people's opinions are dictated by fashion and the media. And you can't judge a band by record/CD sales now there's illegal downloading. I'm sure The Beatles would’ve sold far less records if they were the biggest thing today

    I suggest the following if you look at the root influences of post-blues modern rock. For example Aerosmith, Kiss, Van Halen et al follow on from Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin but there is no band which surpasses Led Zeppelin which was the original.

    Pop = The Beatles

    Rock = Led Zeppelin / Cream

    Heavy Rock = Black Sabbath

    Progressive Rock = Pink Floyd / Yes / Emerson Lake and Palmer

    Acid Rock = Jefferson Airplane

    Guitar = Jimi Hendrix / Joe Satriani

    Punk = The Sex Pistols

    Grunge = Pearl Jam

    Far out! Didn't think anyone else had heard of them. Was the second LP I bought (after Billion Dollar Babies) was called 'Don't be fooled by the name' and yes I still have it. Brian Johnson is listed on the back as 'Vocals'. Brilliant version of 'House of the rising sun'
    Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

    If you're as old as I am and like most things that runs on petrol, you'll agree with my list:

    Queen
    CCR
    Foreigner
    Pink Floyd
    Kiss
    Deep Purple
    ...and so on, you get the drift. Whatever order you arrange them, doesn't matter!

    Not a big fan of KISS,but the man behind them - Bob Ezrin,is also involved in many of my most favorite rock performers.With Ezrin Alice Cooper's music became more commercial and the theatrics years ahead of anyone else.He produced,played and sang on Lou Reed's Berlin album,probably one of the scariest and emotive of Reed's work.He also produced the most theatrical and personal of Pink Floyd albums too - The Wall.A man behind the scenes,but as producer it's almost like his artists changed....

    Hard to put them in any order, but I would pick the following;

    The Who
    Pink Floyd
    Deep Purple

    In the "Progressive Rock" area I would include
    Yes
    ELP (Emerson Lake & Palmer)
    The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown
    The Pretty Things
    Keep the shiny side upright, Rhino.
