Personally, I like the "Show Users Browsing Forums" & "Show Users Browsing Thread".

I too think it might be a plan to start charging for membership. My thoughts would be certain threads should be accessible only to paying members (i.e. meetings & events) cause you wouldn't want people not to join because of the cost.

Advertising may be another option to fund the site.

After doing some tuning and installing APC (PHP caching) I have turned Show Users Browsing Forums & Show Users Browsing Thread back on and will continue to monitor.
