Compaq... the name all techies hate to hear! NEVER buy HP or Compaq... they don't supply restore disks.... the restore files are on the hard drive... if your hd goes belly up... bye bye blackbird!

Knowing the right people shouldn't be necessary to sort this prob.. the facts are that Compaq are seriously an extremely unwise purchase... but good on you for assisting...
Actually... this is definately the case... I know of two poor beggers who have HP/Cmpaq computers who are still arguing with you "work Colleagues" at HP to try and get an XP disk they legallyare entitled to. HP and Compaq are seriously the most unhelpful bunch of pricks I have ever dealt with... but maybe you could also assist these victims of a once great company... If you could pm me..Originally Posted by Blairos
Well - when I see feedback, be it good or bad, its my moral responsibility to at least try to assist... whether or not it is considered a good or bad purchase...Originally Posted by drummer

It just shouldn't be necessary to do this though... Compaq are being penny pinching in supplying no XP disks... and I would think outside of the law.Originally Posted by Blairos
I have a nice wee Ubuntu linux disk here Winja... If you want one PM me, I'll flick it off to you. Easiest install I have ever done. 40 minutes and computer was all done, unlike the average 2 hour plus windows install...
Piece of piss to use too. I have one linux, and one windows, both do same job, so, no dramas
Boyd hh er Suzuki are my heroes!
The best deals, all the time!
People often lose restore CD's, or they may not be passed on if the unit is sold secondhand, thats the thing - depends on the machine too - we have been shipping Restore CD's for a hell of a long time, it may not have even shipped with XP on it,so I wonder how old this unit is.Originally Posted by drummer
As far as the law goes, I am very conversant with what the respective OS obligations were/are.
In any case, I'm not here to have a pissing contest about Computer Brands or what should/should not ship - I can very likely sort this out, pending the requested info from WINJA, thats why I offered
i trust you understand
Cheers

sorry mate... that is plain wrong. I don't know where in HP you work but Compaq machines do not come with a seperate disk... not the ones I have seen. In fact even HP themselves confirmed this after a fruitless fone call. We were told it was tough luck if the operator hadn't burnt a restore disk... something which she knew nothing about... and with no manual with her new computer didn't help either. I applaud you for assisting here but nonetheless Compaq is a complete joke amongst many techies...Originally Posted by Blairos
Re the law... it is the law to provide a product of merchantable quality and I do not consider Compaq to be such with their refusal to supply any restore disks with the product. Merely placing it on a hd partition is not satisfying the needs of the contract with MS if they subsequently refuse to send disks after a hd failure. We were told if it was outside warranty then tough luck.... lawful... absolutely not! Arrogant... absolutely yes.... Reccommend Compaq... never. But good luck to you personally.
Hey pooh pusher, fire me a PM with your address and I'll come around and sort it for yah. Fucking old fat tards these days aye, not knowing how to use a computer.Originally Posted by WINJA

Looks like its not one of the Products I manage then (they all ship with Restore CD's) - sounds like one of our Consumer Products, a Presario perhaps?
Apologies for the experience you got on the phone, If you provide the exact model I can check with the respective Product Manager here or in Asia Pacific, and if the possibility exists that I can source a restore CD or ISO image, then I will do so...
