Well I used to work for Compaqcare last year. With most software issues, we'd just do a full system restore for about $80. If you have your setup discs (either system restore or possibly an OS disc with a Programs disc aswell) just use them. If not you could contact Visual Electronics, cause I think they look after all HP and Compaq stuff now. I think they charge about $50 to make you up a set of discs for any model of HP or Compaq.

If your HDD is rooted just buy another one and cry yourself to sleep.

Compaqcare when I worked for them were just contracted to do warrantee work, and stuff like that. We weren't owned by compaq or HP or anything, and we had to charge for restore cd's otherwise we'd be doing them for free which would come out of our company's pocket. Which I reiterate wass only contracted to do repairs. If you want them for free, then you'd have to go to HP or compaq directly.

In my client's case we have! They were as useful as Helen Clarke... which is f**king useless! Compaq are obligated to supply the os with the system... they do not do that. Instead the owner has to burn their own disks... Something that the useless HP beancounters don't realise a lot of people can't do. Like I always sa... Buy Compaq or HP and you are walkng into your worst nightmare!

This would not be necessary if like all decent manufacturers Compaq included the disks in the first place AND provided a backup service... which they don't... apart from the good people here trying to help of course!

N4CR... I would question the legality of this approach... and would NEVER recommend anyone buying any system where the disks were not ALL included.

Yes, but these 3 and 4 thousand dollar PC's you get stitched up for from Harvey Normans, and the likes, never come with any actual discs, noone I know has ever got anything more than a handful of Works discs, and maybe a network driver. It's one of the reasons you never buy a package deal PC, the software they tell you it comes with, is all preloaded onto the PC, and in the case of your OS, you never ever just get given the damn disc, again, its preloaded.

Compaq do suck a decent amount of balls, their earlier machines you couldnt do soemthing as simple as disabling the shitty onboard graphics to allow you to install a graphics card.

Make N4CR do it Winja, he knows heaps about computers.

All depends if you need stuff off the original disk.

If you dont and all of the above (except for re-install) and still doesn't work then reinstall.

If you only have one PC then....

If you do then the most reliable way (not easiest) is to buy a new HD if you are running out of disk space or get a junker from somewhere else if you still had heaps of space.

Install the new HD where the existing one is (ie disconnect the old). Install your op system (or a buddies if only temp - don't do the on-line verifiication!) on the new HD disk. Leave the old disk disconeccted for now.

When you are happy that the PC is going again then plug your old disk as the secondary.

Reboot (you may also have to do the bios) and you should still be able to see the original disk. If you cant then there are a couple of next steps to get the data off the original disk.

If you have 2 PCs then get the bad disk from the original and plug in as a secondary in the worker. Go from there.

HD is fine, (and its a Notebook thats the object of attention here) from the PM's I have had with WINJA, seems like a dodgy Restore Media set.

I have taken this upon myself to resolve, looks like a bit of HP ownership was required (based on the experience WINJA has had to date), so happy to see this thru to resolution whatever is required...

    Cheers
