TIE,
What do you think of the following (i'll bring the map with me for that coffee I promised u)
- Tirau via Matamata
- Right at Atiamuri onto 30 via Magakino 32 to Turangi
- Desert Rd (get a taste of the cold) alternate West side of Ruapehu 47 if Desert road closed.
- Left at Mangaweka onto 54 thru to Fielding.
- Bunnythorpe, Ashurst, Woodville and 2 thru to WN.
Bit further but less traffic and cops
Checked all over and got the plain soft Oxford pannier bags from Colemans this arvo for $110. Still not sure where to put the duvet???
how does coffee tomorrow sound? and i don't think i have travelled some of those roads so it might just be a good idea. new roads and if it keeps us of the main drag i like it. might even be quicker in some repects.Originally Posted by paturoa
As a really good motorcycling alternative, turn right at Tokoroa instead of Atiamuri. Its shorter to Whakamaru, and fewer straights. The bends are generally open sweepers with a lovely downhill section.Originally Posted by paturoa
Time to ride
Ha those two were just a couple I'd scanned off a while back. Got 2 albums of photos from trips to the brass, some definately not to be shown in public though lols. The 1st one is from 94' and the 2nd is from 89'.Originally Posted by T.I.E
Paturoa haha "the duvet" lols, best advice would be a 4season sleeping bag & a MSR thermal survival blanket
.
One year I was there it was a -13 degree ground frost and another year it was so cold I couldn't sleep even with a tank full of brandy on board ended up doing the all night fire watch, which actually ended up pretty good spoke to a bloke who had the same bike as i had & we compared notes and the bikes had come of the factory production line one after the other going by the serial numbers.
Dam...
So thats a 2 duvet frost!
Camped in moutains behind Lake Tahoe once and absolutely frooze my arse off. Didn't have a bottle of brandy, just as well cos I'd have ended up being bear breakfast. We thought we had plenty of warm kit, I had no idea what cold was up to then.
So far I've got a 3 rating bag and a big old bag to use as an outer. Now looking for an air matress and a under. (Perhaps I can get a duvet in the new panniers)
Those MSR blankets you can get from a outdoor/mountaineering store etc.
ha sounds if you guys might have to end up investing in one of those mini trailers you see being dragged behind Goldwings![]()

And to think I bitch when I'm going with the family for a hol about all the (just in case) crap my misses loads into the family truck. It gets unpacked at the destination, clutters up the place, and Then I load it all back in for the return. And the gottcha at the end is that it normally lies about for a week or so after return.Originally Posted by T.W.R
