What is Starbucks?
What is Starbucks?
Time to ride
I dont think Starbucks' reign extends as far as the deep south...
Not sure if Tera Viva is open anymore - its right across the road from my work (Tait) + it closed late last year because the lease holders wanted too much money for the Cafe to renew the lease. Dunno what state it is in now (shows you how much coffee I drink!).Originally Posted by _intense_
I'll catch up with you guys when you get to Chch. I'm definetly going on the Rally... dressed up a bit warmer than last year me thinks.
i heard it could be a cold one too.Originally Posted by FlyingDutchMan
and the "pig road" i think does not sound like fun. that must be when i put the training wheels on.
thinking about extra wide side bars just icase of an "oppppssssss bloody (insert bad words here) black ice"
i'm still looking for some heated vests and heated undies too.
that would be the 'Pig Route'Originally Posted by T.I.E
Done the brass once, and it was DAMN cold. They closed the road cos it snowed on the night we arrived and didn't open it till 2 pm the next day (saturday). It pays to get there in daylight hours, i.e. before 5pm if poss, easier to avoid the snowdrifts when you can see them![]()
i was very appreciative of having my pillion (sister) on the back. She sang me songs through the headset and basically kept me awake during the torrential rain to Timaru, then kept me warm during the freezing cold ride thru the pig route.
That was 10 years ago exactly, found my badge the other day.
Maybe it is time for a reminder of why I haven't been since? Be a last minute thing if I do venture down there tho

got to hate it when ya can twist someones quote around. but the more the merrier down at the rally for sure. it would be great to meet up with the southern riders. and i could not convince my girl friend to come down with me.Originally Posted by Rashika

It is only when we have lost everything that we are free to do anything.
Probably will be mad enough to go again this yearthough will be waiting at Ashburton to see the local lads do their infamous Lemans start from the clock tower, always a good laugh especially when the odd bike breaks loose

The pig route is ok, just got to keep an eye out for ice & grit. Just be prepared for ranfurly locals wearing gorilla suits & carrying placards advertising soup & hot food. But its always an idea to have a freshen up at Palmerston before hitting the pig route for fuel & to chow down on the lions BBQ stalls![]()

never seen ice/grit before.
and don't want a close look at it either. kinda sounds like fun maybe a high volume flame thrower needs to be attatched to the bike.
or maybe some snow chains.![]()

Ha I'll have to jog my own memory of some of the roadsOriginally Posted by T.I.E

the ice & grit lols just imagine course sand spread over a skating rink
Best time to get through the pig route is before mid arvo & the amount of bikes rolling through there its fairly easy to follow a clean line ( though i have seen a GSX-R11 spit itself 50m out into a paddock only a few kms before Ranfurly, the rider was being a numbnut though & hit black ice at around 200 clicks).
About the most risky business is toddling around the rally site & the gateway area used to be fun late in the day, makes a fairly entertaining spectator sport too![]()
Well you could always go via Dansies Pass, great views and awesome ride... no worries of the black ice thing.Originally Posted by T.I.E
