The word I'm hearing is that there will be checkpoints at Ophir and Ida Valley turnoff on the Sunday morning. Same as the last couple of years.

A bit worried looking at some of the temps, The -12 degrees posted made my mind up. I'm now the proud owner of a new sleeping bag. Ummm not really exciting at all really is it. It's going to be my first brass monkey so I'm starting to get a touch excited

i'm a tad excited aswell. but also very cautious. i am taking it easy, as i am not gonna drop my bike. (touch wood) the tree type.

so i will be paying sepcial attention to all those ahead of me.
i am just a little curious as to where i meet the first snowy icey roads in the south island. so i know where to take it easy, and be nice to know the streatches of roads where i may pick up the pace a little.

so far i have had many comments of "your mad" & "thats crazy thing to do" & "how many do it?"

so i am feeling quite inspired.

Just where you are likely to meet the first snowy or frosty roads depends a lot on the route you take and the weather leading up to your trip and the time of day. There have been many years where the roads have been completely clear.

The most likely place for the first encounter with ice or snow is on the Dersert Road just south of Rangipo. Next is between Waiouru and Taihape. From here the roads are likely to remain clear until you reach the Pig Route.

Just ride sensibly, and treat any shaded spots as potential frosty areas and you should be OK.

One would think that their time could be spent more productively elsewhere.
I think that they caught one bloke last year and none the year before, and I have only heard of prangs on the way to the rally in years past. I didn't realise that there had ever been an issue with folk leaving.
