    Site server requirements and costs

Many people have asked about the cost of running this site. Also many others have offered to help host it and wanted to know what it required. So here are the details.

I run two sites on this server. Kiwi Biker & SV Portal.

    Last updated: 20/11/08

    The cost:
Current server is with MegaNetServ: Setup $40US, Monthly fee $119US

vBulletin license: $30US/year for each site.
    kiwibiker.co.nz domain cost: $35NZ/year
    sv-portal.com domain cost: $35NZ/year

    Server requirements:

This site needs its own server running Linux. Specifically Fedora FC7. I need full control of my own server to be able to do what I do.

    Current server:
    CPU: Pentium 4 2.80GHz
    Memory: 2GB SDRAM
    Disk: 149GB SATA

KB uses 25012MB filesystem and 1603MB database
SV uses 10840MB filesystem and 623MB database

Kiwi biker uses about 320GB/month usage.
SV Portal uses about 65GB/month usage.
This does not include the twice weekly backups to my server at home or downloading software updates.

I also have to run a server 24hrs from home for testing and automated backups of the server in the US.

Here are links to full usage details for KB and SV.

I would like to thank everyone you have donated and setup APs to help with costs.

The biggest cost to me is time. Doing OS and site software updates and modifications.

If you wish to help with the running costs, I can accept donations via PayPal

or via direct debt to my bank.

In my alcohol befuddled mind this information means nothing, however I realise the running costs must be astronomical, please let us know what it costs eh?

AP set up, it's not a lot, but if everyone put in this much it'd pay for the site

    cor blimey ...
I've just been through this with mandrakeusers/mandrivausers

I've got nearly 12,000 registered users, pulling 80g/month just on web traffic.
Spent 6 months hosting a mirror for PLF (penguin liberation front) and PClinuxonline.
Mirrors started pulling 200g/month just on FTP traffic.
    Not doing that anymore

You should shop around I guess ... I buy whoesale data from the UK in 4 terabyte blocks, much cheaper than anything I have ever seen.

Kernow-webhosting was setup to generate some revenue rather than begging users

    much sympathy
