Now before you dumb shits misinterpret this, we're talking about roads and conditions that are conducive to sustained 100k+ action. And he's Aussie-based too, so wasn't just limiting this to NZ.

If you want to talk about males rating their driving ability, I used to be an absolute legend. I kid you not. I'd raced, rallied (legally) and did enough stupid shit in cars to know exactly how a car behaved, and how to control it. My reflexes were razor sharp, my skills were well and truly honed. On the odd occasion that I was driving sensibly on a public road, I was able to avoid the proverbial kid chasing soccer ball because of those quick reflexes and instinctive abilities.

BUT, and here's the BIG but, I was seldom driving sensibly around town. So if a kid stepped out, I was usually travelling at a speed that cancelled out the positives that my extra ability gave me over a dead average driver. Or I'd left such a small margin for error than when shit did happen, well it turned to shit alright.

Nowadays, I can't remember how long it's been since I've had a car on or even near the limit. These days I rely on ABS brakes and I'm bloody glad my slow CVT station wagon has a good crash rating, side intrusion beams and multiple airbags. Cos I'm pretty sure my reflexes now would be so damn dull, and so damn average, that one day I'm gonna need those features.

Personally, I'd rather not have to drive in a country that requires me to be so vigilant at watching the speedo, but thems the breaks.

i was commuting return to dorkland a little while ago, and specifically bought a large car with cruise control, as the 2.0l telstar was getting thrashed - up to 160 every day, as i had my foot on the gas. in the diamante i still went quick (usually around 1hr20 for 138km), but it was a constant speed, rather than up and down like the switch throttled telstar.

i use cruise all the time, otherwise i tend to travel at near-busa speeds. oops.

BUT, i drove to auckland to today, towing a big trailer, most of the time at 110k, saw 1 cop on the expressway with someone stopped, and another at the autobahn. how the fuck does anyone get caught?
