would this be too extreme as a first time adventure ride for a poofy aucklander who is a bit unsure on gravel (meaning me of course)?
i'd be on the mighty SR500.

if you can put some dual sport tyres on it, it's a great dirt bike.

I'm out of DOT rears, well, after this weekend anyway.Given this is a 99% road ride, how ''user friendly'' is this forest bit? I don't want to compromise the rest of the ride for a couple of hundred metres of mud.I don't want to do the Kenda K760's again, they are scary shit on seal, something a lot less agressive is on the cards,I'll be checking out what's in the shops this weekend. We gonna have a map on how the get to this Reperoa place? I'll be coming down friday arvo/evening with the DT230 behind the Paj.
Cool. I'll pencil you in for a bunk at the hut. That'll leave one double & a mattress on the floor for any other starters. Reporoa is 1/2 way between Rotorua & Taupo on SH5. A map will be forthcoming with the info sheet tomorrow.
The 'challenge sections' are all optional & dependent on the weather & how much time we have. I'll be on my current fave combo of TKC80 front & MT70 rear, those D605's would be ideal, something a bit more roady like an MT90 or Sirac would do OK as well.

    Cheers

I'd like another IRC GP22 to match my 80% GP21 front.A great tyre on seal, and even completely bald had more grip in gravel than the the Kenda K760 I replaced it with....not an off road tyre, but did pretty good on the wet clay 4x4 track I took it up.So who does IRC? I'm also tempted to put my foot where my mouth is and try a Trials tyre.....

Those IRC's look OK, most bike shops have a few (or the similar pirelli MT40) in the rack for cheap that they've taken off the farmbikes that come in with em standard. Pity they're a bit narrow for the 640, it'd be economical motoring.

IRC's are imported and distributed by W White wholesale in Hamilton. So a hamilton bike shop should be able to get you one pretty quickly. Unless you have trade contacts

My wife said - ''That's the weekend of my *0th birthday party!'' Sounds like a good time to be away for a few days.....My search for a tyre in Auckland was fruitless, although it did turn up 4.00x18 TCK80's,tempting,but for that price I'd like the right size for my bike.4.60x18 seem to be hard to find in an adventure DOT tyre, even 110/100.I put on my lowering links with a 4.00 as it raises the seat height....and the gearing.

But other news at my youngest sons birthday yesterday may make another family gathering with patriarch in attendance important....I may need to be there.....

    Hi XTC,

Rides imminent so time to get a new rear tyre. I'm not going to get another MT21 - don't last long enough and the "singing" on seal drives me crazy.

What sort of life/kilometres do you get out of a D605 rear?
And, are they noisey on the seal?

    Update 12/6

PM'ed ya with the info Ben S.

Everything is under control. The Hut fridge is stocked. Talked to Ann at the Station last night, Cooking dinner for 8-10 of us is no problem. Going by past experience this means on Saturday night we're in for a fantastic meal. There'll be 4 doz beer in the chiller for us too.

Now I just have to service the 640, put on the new MT70 rear (3rd one this year!) & convert it back to adv mode from it's current road race configuration.

    Cheers
    Clint
