A 170km range should be enough. My Sister will be coming along on her 1st adv ride so the pace won't be too extreme, I expect the XT230 she'll be on will have a limited range too. We can fill up at Journeys End Station & I'll lay in a fuel dump at Mum's in Minginui in case anyone is short. I can also carry a 5L can for ya if you're short on space. I'll trace out the route on the map tonight & check the distances.

    Cheers

You'll be sweet Motu, the longest leg should be about 150km from Journey's End Station to Frasertown. I'll put on the 18L tank anyway so I can give ya a sip out of that if need be.

We've got 9 starters so far. Let me know if you want a bunk at the Hut.

    Cheers

This sounds like a bloody good ride, how many Km approximately in total and what is the pace expected to be? And are sports bikes that go offroad welcome?

It will probably be around 700 km total, depending on how many side trips we do. The pace will be medium. If you are confident on steep, narrow, twisty, heavily cambered muddy &/or rocky gravel roads you'll be fine, plenty have taken road bikes through these roads, mind you a few have broken road bikes on them too.
The side trips that we'll do if weather & time permit won't be roadbike friendly though, but you could always just carry on & wait at the next pub or whatever.

    Cheers

I did the Motu Rd with XTC a year or so ago and theres no way I'd take a road bike thru it.

So 2 tanks of gas then..... Motu I will be able to spare you some go go juice if ya needs it. But by the sounds the distances will be within DeeTee's range (depends on whether you do anymore beach racing!)

    would you ride down XTC?
would this be too extreme as a first time adventure ride for a poofy aucklander who is a bit unsure on gravel (meaning me of course)?
i'd be on the mighty SR500.

Yes I'll be riding down. Probably with Cary. It won't be too extreme as it'll all be road based by the sounds. The SR would do fine. If you need a lift down on a ute or something I hear Rogson is going to take his down with the bike on the back.

Yep, I'm going, but I can't go down Friday, so it looks like an early start Saturday morning for me (back Sunday night).

Because of this, I am thinking of taking my bike to Reperoa on the ute. I can take one other on the back or could take up to three others if someone can provide a trailer. Seats available on a share the petrol cost basis.

    PM me if interested.

Alrighty. Looks like we've got 8 definites & 3 maybees. I'll finish off the info sheet & maps tonight & send that out tomorrow. Late entries will be accepted with suitable bribes (preferably single malt scotch)

I need all the starters to PM me your name, ph# & bike make, model & rego for the (free) forest access permits for Kaingaroa. If the maybees can send this info too it would be good, it doesn't matter if you don't use it & it'll save me going twice.

Jeez Badcat, you've only just finished that beautiful SR500 & you wanna come down here & cover it in mud! ... You'll fit right in! ... As I've mentioned the pace won't be extreme at all. The Motu will be a bit rough, especially as the Rotorua Rally went through last weekend (mind you they might run a grader through after that) but nothing the SR won't handle.

    Cheers
    Clint

I'm a maybe - but when Motuspouse gets back after her week in ChCh I'll be pushing my case....I think I have grounds for time off.I haven't done the Motu and gone around the lake since my eldest daughter was born, and she's 25 this year,I'd love to go and check it out again.

I'm out of DOT rears, well, after this weekend anyway.Given this is a 99% road ride, how ''user friendly'' is this forest bit? I don't want to compromise the rest of the ride for a couple of hundred metres of mud.I don't want to do the Kenda K760's again, they are scary shit on seal, something a lot less agressive is on the cards,I'll be checking out what's in the shops this weekend. We gonna have a map on how the get to this Reperoa place? I'll be coming down friday arvo/evening with the DT230 behind the Paj.
