WTB: Suzuki TL1000 Rotary Damper Unit

    Hi Everyone,
Im after a Rotary Damper unit. Doesnt have to be working or in good condition. Anything is fine. Preferably cheap or free! Can pick up anywhere in the Auckland region or a little north or south. Will pay for postage perhaps if you're not near.

Ideally Im after one from the TL series, Im not too sure if any other bikes came with rotary dampers, if some did, then Id consider those as well.

This is for a research project with the University of Auckland, implementing rotary dampers into the race-car/go-cart we build from scratch every year to race overseas. Carbon fibre monocoque, brembo brakes, Supercharged Yamaha R6 engine, standalone Autronic engine management and a whole bunch of other things to make it go quite fast

If anyone could help us out, it would be great,
    Cheers
    Ken

Hey clip14, welcome to KB... can't help you with a rotary damper unit *wonders what one of those are* although I'm sure someone here will know someone that will have one...

Sounds like an interesting project. GOOD LUCK!!!

    A Thought

Perhaps the NZ Ohlin's agent may know where there is one?

I would think you would be able to get one really really cheap if not free. Heaps of people replace them with aftermarket units because the rotary ones were a bit crap. Try looking on www.tlplanet.com. I think GP Trading in Tauranga had a few TL parts too, I got my camshafts off them for my TL.

    Hi guys
    thanks heaps for the replies,

    Saul : check your pms

Im not sure how many units we will need, so if you still have a source for them, please still post it up here.

The plan at the moment is to disassemble a unit, and modify the valving and seals, and test the changes on a shock dyno. Ive found a bunch of info on those TLzone forums about modifications to the dampers to try make them more responsive.

If all goes well, we might even be able to post up another guide up here for all you TL owners to improve the performance of the rotary dampers.

If any of you are interested in our project, our 2004 car is on display in the School of Engineering library at the University of Auckland. Much has changed since then, the 2004 car runs a N/A Yamaha R6 engine and a different chassis setup.

Take a look at our current car that we are working on at the moment. It is heading down to New Plymouth in a few weeks for a show, so any people in the lower north island can check it out.
