Damned flat spots

Hi everyone,

The FXR has one of those flat spots. Been like this for awhile now, thought I had it fixed, but its still there.

Basically between 7-8.5k ish(redline 12.5k) there is bugger all power. Most noticible in 6th gear. Above and below the power is normal, and apart from this niggle everything else is normal.

However, the tricky part is that if you accelerate through the flat spot range starting from 6-7k or so the power is linear, but if you try to go hard and when you change up the revs land in the flat spot, it is slow until it reaches about 8.5k, where it picks up. Very strange.

Im wondering if the carbie needs a slight tweak, would this be a sign of running slightly rich or lean?

Wouldn't surprise me if it's lean, I've seen one eat a plug electrode in less than 4000kms

They're a great learner bike though, just flog it till you're on your full

I had exactly the same thing on my FXR when I was learning.

Like imdying says, just use it as a learning machine till you are ready to step up.

Sell it and buy an RG.......i got bored with the FXR in about 1 month. The whole bike is a flat spot. Yet i rode the RG for about 2 years.

Ok, so how would you go about richening it up slightly(is it the midrange?)

Well, the mixture screw won't do it, it's just an idle mixture. You'll need to change your jet/needle. What to? Depends on what you've got in there. You can change the needle height on most carbs by moving the clip (you'll know it when you see it, it's a circlip that fits on the needle), might be worth a crack, and it's free

Hopefully someone who races buckets might have some advice
