"he said, tongue in cheek"! My Dad was a Farrier, (along with being a Butcher and a farmer), so I can remember his work. We used to discuss the merits of shoes with clients and Dad's opinion was that if fitted correctly and the hooves well cared for, shoes were better for the horse as there was a lot of road riding, esp on metal roads.

No doubt you've seen some poorly kept horses, though, as we did. Used to make Dad pretty mad if the owner didn't take the effort to care for their horse's hooves.

Horses in the wild do not need shoes & on a general day can travel 40+ ks .. however now the wild horses have been culled they do not need to travel therefore their feet are not being worn down ..

for our domesticated horses it does take a couple of weeks to toughen their feet ( bit like wearing shoes all winter then barefoot in summer .. a bit ouchy) however there are a number of endurance riders who regularly compete 100 ks barefoot and their horses do not go lame.

The frog on the horses hoof acts as a pump to circulate blood. With shoes on it restricts this movement and the blood from the knee down does not circulate easily .. barefoot horses, have good circulation and live longer have better coat condition, and move much more freely etc ..

    thats just a wee insight

Interesting! I was rather young at the time, (early/mid '60's), so thanks for the info.

I work in, and have been for quite some time now, the construction industry basically as a project manager. Most of my clients are developers and property investors doing large amounts of residential developments, as well as the odd home owner wanting a new home built. I also know how to swing a hammer ok.

I am contemplating a bit of a career change into the world of business management or property management, or working directly with a developer. I also have a HUGE entreprenuerial streak and use most of my free time (that not spent riding) working on my own business plans and venture opportunities.
