    To see a life newly created.To watch it grow and prosper. Isn't that the greatest gift a human being can be given?

    I'm a printer, working for a company in Auckland that specialises in the wine industry.

    Been doing the commute thing from Napier to Auckland every week for a while now but eventually will call it quits and work in the bay.

    Can't help much with any small run stuff like business cards and the like as we only do self adhesive printing on roll stock but we do have a commercial print side to the business. I could put a good word in for anyone after a quote.

    I'm a full time lazy prick. I get paid to sit in an office and offer my uneducated opinions on internet forums. When I'm not doing that, I drink coffee and talk shit about bikes and when I'm not doing that and actually need to get paid, I seel bikes. Perfect!

    Yeah,anyone who thinks tradesmen overcharge should try and scrape a living doing it - wish I was a young wizz kid who knew all about computers and charged 3 times my charge out rate for half the time with only a fraction of my outlay in equipment....oh,the education they paid for - what the hell do ya think I've been doing for nearly 35yrs,I've been learning mate!

    Aye, but it's not how hard you work which dicates what you get paid, it's how much of other people's money you're responsible for. Sad, but generally true. It's kind of like insurance in a way...
    When computer guys cock-up, it can often mean a whole business can't make any sales and has to pay staff to sit around and do nothing - that's expensive, hence the pay.
    CEO's can make bucket loads cos if they cock-up, companies lose millions and the staff lose their jobs. Consultants and accountants save people and business lots of $$$.
    A lot tradespeople work really hard - long hours and a lot of effort goes into their work - but sadly the work itself is generally its own reward. This is true of teachers and nurses too (although one can't really put a dollar figure on someone else's life).
    There are plenty of exceptions, especially in specialty areas, but it mostly holds true...

    Yes, I tried to stay out of this, but sadly I am also a computer guy. I run my own network support business. And yeah, I do ok. I don't really think its different to any other trade. I have met many a computer incompetent academic who thinks networking is just about reading books. Knew a person once with more degrees than the farenheit scale, still didn't know how to unscrew a floppy disk drive from a cage...Bring back apprenticeships, but that's another thread...

    PS - the equipment can be more expensive than you would beleive! Especially when it comes to software...

    Why waste money on a car when it will buy new sticky tyres and silly motorcycle baubles!

    4 years and $20,000 turned me into an engineer so no more lying on the concrete for me

    Yeah - LOL.....my finances resemble that car.

    I forgot to add - I have done lending for most things you could consider buying - from planes to helicopters, from bikes to cars, from Beach Houses to Corporate Head Offices.....from $1000 to $30m - and everything in the middle. So if you want a hand let me know.

    You must be a good one - you've obviously got your work-life balance right and a garage full of Porsche and MV's......

    I did some Pro*C work for Port of Wellington a few years ago, mainly to create EDI documents.

    For the DB size you could try:

    set pages
    set lines 10000
    set trimspool on
    select file_name||'|'||substr(file_name,instr(file_name,'/',-1,1)+1)||'|'||bytes from dba_data_files
    UNION
    select file_name||'|'||substr(file_name,instr(file_name,'/',-1,1)+1)||'|'||bytes from dba_temp_files
    UNION
    select member||'|'||substr(member,instr(member,'/',-1,1)+1)||'|'||bytes from v$logfile f,v$log l where f.group# = l.group#
    UNION
    select name||'|'||substr(name,instr(name,'/',-1,1)+1)||'|' from v$controlfile;

    Spool it out to a file and open it in excel. The | is the delimter. It'll give you the locations/sizes of all your datafiles, tempfiles, controlfiles and redo logs.
